“A Hidden Treasure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2012

We needed to find a place to stay near to the church where we were unfortunatley attending a funeral. I found the Royal Oak on a search site and it seemed to foot the bill in terms of location and a competive price.
The Royal Oak offered great service great food and a very warm welcome, we slept well in the comfortable room and had a wonderful breakfast before we left. We found ourselves wishing that we lived in the village and this was our local. We managed to forget for a while the reason we were staying there and would recommend it without hesitation.

“Quite a little gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2012

The owners keep things simple and simply do them well. I'm not in any way local to this part of the country and was simply looking for a semi decent place to have sunday lunch with family from up north so my expectations were for nothing special. However, from the friendly greeting on arriving to the attentive service throughout I was very impressed. The quality of food is excellent and the portions are as you would hope, but rarely get, for a proper sunday lunch. Add to this the great value of the menu and this could quickly become a destination restaurant rather than simply a pit stop.

“Lovely pub, good food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2012

We called in last week for a meal, our first time there. An attractive room (which is both the bar and the eating area) and a friendly welcome from the landlady. We chose to share a baked camembert for starters, then followed with the unusual (and new to us) rock stone grill. The camambert was perfection - molten and runny, topped with caramalised onions and served with chutney, apple, grapes, celery, breadsticks and bread for dipping. It was very delicious......and very filling! Then came the mysterious "rock stone" course - we went for a swordfish steak, and a sirloin steak. The rockstone is brought to the table with warnings not to touch as it's hot hot hot! Basically, you cook your meat/fish (veggie choice also available) to your own taste on the red hot stone. It comes with two side dishes from a big choice - salad, veg, roasted veg, chips, baked spud, dauphinoise potato.......the list goes on. A novel idea, and reasonably priced, plus it added a fun element to the night. The one downside was that my clothes smelt of fried food (but the same happens in places where sizzling griddles are offered). Very enjoyable meal in a lovely environment. There were a few locals in watching the football on the tv, but the volume was kept low and the tv was hidden away in the corner so it didn't spoil the ambience of the eating area. Would go back and would recommend.
