“Wonderful find”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2013

We stayed here in march ...a wonderful find...food is out of this world and the quaint rooms are clean spacious and lovely. They are in a converted stable block outside from the pub. We loved it so much I am getting ready here for my wedding in 2014 ,as getting married in the castle nearby? Friendly service...wonderful wine selection ....f

We eat here fairly regularly – usually for lunch and I’m glad to say that the high standard of food prevails (try the gammon or steak frites) and the ales are well kept. Always a nice welcome and service, a good (sometimes huge!) fire in the bar if cold outside – and dogs welcome in the bar. Always worth a visit.

We had a fabulous Sunday Lunch in the bar area. Rib of beef was really good. Good atmosphere especially as it was really busy with a Christening going on as well. All was really good bar the childrens' bland pasta dish (with just cream and no seasoning). It was resolved quickly so no problem there. Nothing that would put us off going again though.

My wife and I found this restaurant by luck after having travelled to the Game Fair at nearby Belvoir castle (which was cancelled). The restaurant is listed on the Michelin website and rightly so. The menu is excellent and for those that do not want too fancy the traditional pub options are available also.

Lovely lunch - arrive early to avoid disappointment or book (Sound advice).

Dogs are welcome in the bar - a big plus for a dog owner.

We met friends here for lunch last week and what a let down it was. We've been going every so often for the last 5 years and I can truly say this was the worst meal we have had there. It's such a shame, because the place itself is lovely, although is looking a little tired around the edges and the bar man was friendly.
My partner ordered a burger, asking for it rare - to be told he couldn't have it rare as they have make sure it's cooked through! Note - rare doesn't mean raw! I went for the steak sandwich, as to be really truthful, nothing else on the menu took my fancy. The menu here, as with all their pubs, seems to have considerably dumbed itself down, or at least at lunch anyway. The waitress returned to tell us they had run out of burgers (12.30 on a Thursday lunchtime?!) so he opted for the steak sandwich. We both wished we hadn't as in all honesty, we really didn't enjoy them. The steak was small chunks in a really sweet sticky gravy, with burnt onions and overcooked mushrooms. The salad was ok as were the chips (although our friend's portion with his sandwich was twice the size!) The bread was too crispy and difficult to eat. My other friend had fish and chips which she didn't look to be enjoying! I had a nice glass of Chenin Blanc. Would we return? Probably not if the menu and quality stays like this :(

We went to the Chequers for a short break and were not disappointed. It is in a lovely location near Belvoir Castle and the peace and quiet was noticeable. The rooms are in a separate block, ours was a good size with plenty of wardrobe space, dressing table and good sized tv. The bathroom was on the small side and the shower was a bit grubby with lime scale and rust. The grouting needed redoing. However the pub itself was fantastic. The food was lovely and reasonably priced for the portion sizes. The bar had a vast range of gins, single malt whiskies and cognacs and the bar man was very helpful in recommending what to try next. All staff were very friendly and efficient , especially Mandy. All in all would definitely recommend.

"We regularly eat at The Chequers as a family and have always experienced excellent food and service. The staff are always very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. A wide choice of menu options is always available, and the food is always excellently cooked and very well presented. We would highly recommend The Chequers to anyone thinking of visiting for a meal or just a drink in the very welcoming bar. We stayed in one of the rooms opposite, which means that you can sample even more of the extensive wine list!,the rooms are very comfortable and its very quiet which along with the wine allows for a great nights sleep."
