“Almost a good place.”
Reviewed December 17, 2012 for a stay in December 2012

Not desperately impressed. The heating wasn't turned on until we got there - in the Highlands in winter that meant spending the first day wearing hats and coats indoors for the first day. Also, we were charged an extra £100 for bringing two extra people even though those two extra were under fives. Admittedly, I should have checked what the deal was, but it still meant the weekend ended on something of a sour note. Oh well, you might have more luck.

It's always disappointing when people re-arrange the facts to make a good story.
As you will see from the listing above, Holmhill House sleeps 14 in total. Ms Fielding's booking was confirmed in writing as 12 adults and 2 children (there was no requirement for a cot) - so 14 in total means we're full.
We were asked if we would accommodate the group's arrival 4 hours ahead of the normal entry time and again we were happy to oblige.
On arrival, there were actually 14 adults along with two children in the group. This is obviously a significant problem, but rather than ruin their break by turning them away, the Holmhill Team went into overdrive. We located an extra bed, assembled it and made it up with fresh linen, we then made a cot available for one of the children thereby freeing up another bed for one of the additional adults. We would have declined the booking at outset had we known how many people were going to be staying in the house.
The Highlands do get very cold and for this very reason, the central heating has to be on every day in the winter whether there a guests staying or not. On arrival, all guests are shown where the control for the heating system is and written instructions are also left to ensure that they know how to use the system. We did get a call at around 5.30pm that afternoon from Ms Fielding to say that she couldn't get the central heating to work, we reassured her that we would have someone with her as a matter of urgency. We received a second call 15 minutes or so later to say that they had worked out how to switch it on and all was well.
At the end of their break, we raised with Ms Fielding the problems that had been caused to us by her turning up out of the blue with two more adults than had been expected and charged a token £100 for all the work, effort and inconvenience that had been caused as a result.
We make every effort to ensure that all our guests have a fantastic experience at Holmhill House and we are always disappointed when people don't enjoy their stay but as the saying goes, you can't please all of the people all of the time (but we do try - honestly)!

“Holmhill House August 2012”

We went here to celebrate our silver wedding with our family which included people who had travelled from the south of England and Australia. It was a huge success. The accommodation was ideal and the house is extremely well equipped. The bedrooms were lovely and the views from the master bedroom balcony are fab. The kitchen was great for cooking and gatherings and we were also lucky enough to have Judy come in and cater for us on two occasions which was quite outstanding. We were a large party, but the house is very spacious it never felt crowded. There is a lovely large livingroom for when everyone gets together and the dining room too is spacious enough for a large party and it has great views. It is a great place to stay.

“Holmhill house May Bank Holiday 2012”

We rented the house for our annual trip away, 13 adults and 2 children in all. The house fitted our criteria perfectly with a big kitchen, big dining room and sitting room for the adults and a seperate TV room and a games room for the kids. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook a meal for all on the first night and the dining room sat us all comfortably. Not all the rooms are ensuite but if you are family or long standing friends this is not a challange and the attic space is perfect with two rooms sharing a lovely bathroom. It was really nice to come in from a walk, light the coal fire and relax in the sitting room before heading out. Good area as well with a few really good restaurants and some nice walks for all levels of fitness. Would recomend this highly.

“Informative, welcoming and relaxed hosts, lovely house & spacious room, good breakfast, central location to tour area!”
Reviewed June 18, 2010 for a stay in May 2010

Mel and Mike were lovely hosts The house itself had a lovely feel, very homely and beautifully decorated. We had the Honeymoon Suite (!) as we were alone there - we timed it right as it had been full the week before and it was to be shortly after! The bedroom was spacious and very comfortable, quiet location so you will get a good night's sleep.

The choice at breakfast was excellent - Mel even arranged kippers for me as a special request! Nothing was too much bother and both gave us good advice on eateries and places to visit in the area. Excellent location to tour the area - visited the coast, Balmoral, Culloden - so much to see.

“A Very Pleasant Stay”
Reviewed June 7, 2009 for a stay in April 2009

We stayed here for 3 days & found it a very pleasant, comfortable place to stay. Mel & Mike were great hosts - very welcoming & friendly & their knowledge of the area was wonderful. They went out of their way to give us advice on how to get to places & even looked up opening times for some on the internet. Our room was so big & really nicely decorated - it was lovely to have so much space to spread out. The room was made up daily, bathroom done & tea, coffee & shortbreads replenished. The heating worked well & soap & shampoo was provided. Breakfast was very good with more food offered if you wanted. Would definitely stay here again if we were in the area, it would be like visiting old friends.
