“Not to everyone's taste”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

The Grant Arms is a very well maintained and preserved country town hotel. It appears to have found a niche with an older clientele with a particular interest in nature watching. It has put resources into this and appears to do it very well.
This focus may have resulted in an inflexibility we found - as an example we were allocated a table in the dining room when we arrived for a two day stay and we could not change it in spite of two attempts with the staff.
The menu changed each evening - which is good however the meals were pricey for the fairly basic fare. The offering of wine by the glass was of 1/3 bottles of some house brand - which is unacceptable. How hard is it to serve the core of your winelist by the glass?
Our room was clean and warm however we found the bed, (only a double which is on the small side for two people these days), pretty ordinary.

Originally I had booked this hotel for £160 per night which seems to be the going rate on most hotel booking websites - for this you expect something pretty good. Luckily, I spotted that the rate had come down a couple of days beforehand and I cancelled and rebooked at a lower rate of £90. The public areas are nicely furnished but in traditional style. Receptionist was pleasant. The room was extremely average - standard size - strange choice of traditional decor - red curtains, green carpet, pink chair, black and white bedding - they really do need some help with interior design! The view through the small window was completely blocked by the fire escape. The cornicing seemed to stop 2/3 of the way round - with an odd mixture of patterns on the ceiling. The bed was hard and the springs made a noise every time you moved - I woke up every morning stiff. All was clean. Dinner was expensive for what it was - £30 pp for 3 courses off a set menu - al a carte much more. It was average - nothing memorable. Breakfast was served buffet style - and fried eggs are never good like this. They also seemed to have cooked everything at the same time so quite rubbery if you were not there at crack of dawn! I asked for bread to make myself a bacon sandwich the 2nd day (it is on the munu) but this was stale. Kippers and poached egg were good. There was a couple of cereal choices but the only pastries were croissant which were cold and dry. A quirk is that you are seated at the same table for all your meals - a bit like when you on a coach holiday! They are big on the birdlife and there was a daily programme of what to look for. To "complement" this there is constant piped birdsong in the reception and even on the bedroom tv which was of the old fashioned type with limited programmes. In summary, an average hotel and very expensive for what you get.

This was our 4th holiday to the Grant Arms Hotel. As always perfect in every respect. We are already looking forward to Christmas, and have booked in for 5 days. The bird watching " club " is an excellent addition to the facilities.

My colleague and I stayed in this hotel as a base for our fishing expedition on the River Spey. The hotel room was spacious and well appointed whilst the staff were most helpful with nothing too much bother. The food was of a high standard with friendly service. We would certainly contemplate staying in this establishment again.

This was our first stay at this hotel and our first time to the Highlands. We stayed for four nights on a dinner bed and breakfast basis. The food was of an excellent standard and all of the staff we came into contact with we're very helpful. Our room which was a standard room was very spacious, clean and well presented. There was plenty of literature and maps in the room to assist with the planning of your day. The Birdwatching and Wildlife Club which is situated at the hotel was an excellent resource when deciding where to go and watch to do and there were endless maps of walks of varying lengths which were extremely useful. Through the hotel you can book the services of a personal guide for Birdwatching trips. We went with Dave Slater and found him ,to be an excellent guide with a vast knowledge on the birds , local wildlife and places of interest. Considering we had never met him before, we found that after just a few minutes, it was like we had known him for ages. I would definitely recommend a trip out with Dave

We first stayed at the Grant arms October 2012, along with a bird watching trip organised by Birdwatching Magazine. This was an excellent experience, so we decided to visit again in the Spring.
We were not disappointed, and will certainly come again.
If televisions are important to you a digital upgrade is eminently planned
