My friend and I spent a lovely 4 nights at The Carlton Hotel. We had a very warm welcome, our room was comfortable although a little tired, but the Hotel is being re-furbished whilst we were there. The food was very good and the choices equally as good. Our waitress 'Nellie' was such a sweet person nothing was too much trouble for her considering she was run off her feet. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. We would definitely stay there again, may in the summer.
Room 300.

Room Tip: We were on the top so very quiet we didn't have a see view.

Thanks for taking the time to post a positive review of your recent stay at the Carlton. I will look at procedures in the restaurant as you mentioned you thought it looked chaotic, this is opposite of what I expect guests to experience. But thank you once again for all the other positives.

visited the bay Carlton hotel for the weekend 8/3/13 with national travel , very friendly hotel and the food was spot on with three course and three choices for breakfast and evening meals. the room we had was at the back and on its own at the end of a long corridor. was comfortable with an en suite newly refurbished I think had a bath with shower over it large sink unit and toilet there was radiators in both room and bathroom which was needed with it being a cold weekend with rain wind and snow, .we had free drinks to an extent (4 free drinks each per day which went down very well) all were named brands as well. all in all with the crowd of passengers we were with had a very enjoyable time , will definitely return to t.his hotel.

Room Tip: would not want room 152 again owing to it being at the end of corridor on its own.

I’m pleased to see that you found the hotel friendly and that the food was “spot on”. The hotel does sell Bay inclusive packages during parts of the year which will entitle you to 4 free drinks each night, please check your package to avoid disappointment. Looking forward to your return to see if we can increase your review score to five blobs.

My wife and I travelled to this hotel on 04/03/2013. It is located in a quiet end of the seafront, but only a 15 minutes walk into the town centre. The hotel was clean and the staff were very helpful and accommodating. The food was pretty average, but for the price we paid it was good value. There was a well stocked bar which was open all day for drinks and bar snacks. We were on half board but we did eat out a couple of times as there are plenty of places to eat in the town. We enjoyed the Wetherspoons next to the bus station and taxi rank, so if you didn't fancy the walk back to the hotel, you could always get a cab. There is also a taxi rank close to the hotel if you don't fancy the walk into town. We did not have any serious complaints about this hotel.

Room Tip: There is a lift in the hotel, but if you don't fancy that, there are rooms on the ground floor.

Happy to see no complaints regarding your recent stay and that the hotel was clean with helpful staff, I’m surprised that you found the food was only average but everybody’s taste is different and most go away very happy with the food quality. The hotel is located in a quiet area the town being just a short walk away.

Hope to see you soon,

we booked this hotel for a short break with shearings for three nights 1/03/13-4/03/13 on a half board basis. first impression was that it is run down and needs refurbing, when we walked through through the entrance it stunk of damp and mildew. we were allocated room 5 which was little more than a box room. the room stunk of damp the wallpaper was peeling off, there was a draught from the windows no heating in the bathroomand to be honest i wouldnt have let my dog sleep in there.we asked for another room to be told the only ones available were sea view rooms at extra cost and so we decide d to drive home the next day after again requesting a room change which was refused.my advice would be avoid.

Room Tip: avoid room 5

I am very surprised at you comments regarding the hotel. As regards to refurbishment the hotel in the next couple of months will have completed all public areas and the entertainment room, nearly half of all the bedrooms will have also been completed. There is definitely no damp or mildew smell in the entrance, your allocated room 5 is a smaller room but still meets the required standard, after inspection I can find no peeling wallpaper and the window does close fully to stop draughts?.

I’m sorry that you did not feel the hotel was suited to your needs.

We booked for a 3 night stay at Carlton Hotel with National Holidays which included drinks vouchers and was excellent value for money. When we arrived our keys etc were brought to us personally on the coach so there was no messing about queueing plus we all had an allocated table for meals so there was no waiting to get a table. My general comments would be the hotel is very well run and the staff are excellent. Nothing is too much trouble. Entertainment was not to my taste but that's not important to us as we prefer to explore the place we are visiting. The food was very good with plenty of choice at breakfast and dinner. If you fancied a bit more of something the waiting staff happily brought it for you.
Going into more detail the stay wasn't totally without hiccups. As it was our wedding anniversary I wanted a nice room so paid for a seaview upgrade. We got room 221 which was ok but the window is kind of in the corner and was grubby plus you can't actually see very much of the sea for various buildings and amusements - but technically it was a seaview so we shrugged and settled in. We noticed the floorboards were very creaky which seemed funny at first but turned out to be less amusing the next morning. Bed was a bit firm but slept ok till 6am when we were woken by the creaking of the floorboards from the room above us which went on for about an hour (what on earth they were doing walking around constantly for all that time so early goodness knows).
For the first time ever I went to the reception and asked for another room. The young lady offered us 3 rooms but 2 were on the same floor so we went for the one on the 3rd floor (307) which would not have any overhead creaky floorboards. Unfortunately the window was very small and the only way to look out was standing up close. It was also dirty and had bird droppings on it. So I returned to reception and requested that the window be cleaned and was told the housekeepers could not clean the windows externally. So I advised her I would clean them myself which I did, internally and externally. It was a bit dissapointing and I wished we hadn't bothered paying for the upgrade. However the bed was a bit softer and the sheets nice and clean. There was a stale tobacco smell particularly in the bathroom but we kept the window open and the extractor fan on for a while each time we came in. There was also a bit of damp on the wall which was probably a roof leak.
The meals are very good standard with a different menu every night with several choices. But even more impressive than the food was the staff who are all polite, eager to help and friendly and professional. It's not always like that on National Holiday trips when you can be made to feel like second class citizens, sometimes even segregated from other guests and fed different menus but none of that nonsense in the Carlton Hotel. Everyone is treated like royalty.
We found the entertainment room downstairs a bit uncomfortable with just dining chairs and tables and the music a bit old fashioned so we went up to the other bar which has comfier seating but could have done with some background music - maybe even a juke box? There was also a flat screen tv in there.
Plumbing is a bit mad in the bathrooms and takes a bit of getting used to and you have to remember to adjust the plug or the bath fills up while you're showering. But though the water flow varies while you're under it the temperatures are ok and can get a bit hot if you are not careful.
A note to anyone considering a National Holiday break in Great Yarmouth - don't bother with the excursion to Wroxham. You will be stuck there in excess of 3 hours and there is nothing interesting there at all. We spent a full 2 hours using the Wifi in MacDonalds we were so bored. Everybody felt the same and at the 2nd location we refused to get off the coach. Thank God it was not raining - there might have been serious rioting on that bus back to the hotel :)
So to summarise - good hotel, great staff, not bad rooms, entertainment geared to elderly but a good effort and I would definitely stay there again if I returned to Great Yarmouth (which I don't plan to as we have similar seaside towns much nearer and I didn't find the Norfolk Broads particularly pretty). If you like a seaview take a chance on getting one without upgrading and if you don't you can request one when you arrive. If creaky floorboards drive you mad request 3rd floor or take some earplugs. All in all you can see real effort is being made to make this hotel the best it can be. P.S. Wifi would be nice.

Room Tip: 3rd floor rooms quieter and you can see the sea over the buildings a bit better

We are always pleased to see reviews like yours so that we know what we are doing is on the right track, thank you once again and it is a shame you did not find the broads to your liking.
