“Fab homecooked food”
Reviewed November 12, 2012

Called in for sunday tea yesterday and although it was busy and we didn't book they managed to accomodate us.
There was a good selection from their Sunday menu.
I had fishcakes whilst my partner had the garlic mushrooms. Both were piping hot with plenty of flavour.
John originally ordered the fish and chips however then he saw the pie and changed his mind. The pie was huge with loads of meat - not grissle or fatty bits. Very rustic with homemade pastry and chips. I had the beef sunday lunch and all was gorgeous. The beef was really tender and again, no fatty bits.
We didn't have room for a pudding but we saw a sponge pudding come out and must say we were tempted. We will definately be going again!

“Could be so much better...”

Completely agree with the review "What's going on here" by Carole A. We too are frequent visitors to the Maypole and have been for many years and really do not want to see this fantastic pub decline once more. We came for dinner last week and had the fish & chips which were extremely poor - Batter was dark brown and the chips were grey. Please, please can you take a leaf out of The Old Bridge Inn, Ripponden which is excellent all round and always buzzing. Sadly, people vote with their feet rather than say something hence why I'm on here, and it was very evident that we were not the only ones to think this, judging by the empty tables around us at 8pm on a Friday night? ...

“Lovely country pub”

Nice, basic food, good atmosphere, decent ales and car parking. Can get a little crowded and the service might suffer a little but worth the wait.

“What is going on here”
Reviewed November 7, 2012

We are frequent visitors to the Maypole and were very very disappointed on our last visit. We took friends and we all ordered different meals. The steak pie was delicious says my friend but the chips were terrible. My husband had salmon which was overlooked and the chips terrible. Another friend had the battered haddock. This is usually a big piece of white fish with crispy batter. The batter was soggy and the fish inside looked grey, he was lucky though as he had mash which was nice. I had a ceasar salad very little lettuce which I love, come on chef lettuce is cheap so with so little on the plate it was just a limp mess topped with chicken. I had also ordered chips on the side. The chips were HUGE and a terrible colour with no real tase and no crispness at all. In short we all left the chips and complained that they were horrid. Waitress said she would tell chef but we heard nothing more. So disappointed we are all seriously thinking of knocking it off the list of our well used restaurants. Shame on you Maypole, we expected better as regular customers.

“Excellent local pub with quality dining - view's from garden are outstanding”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

We found this pub to be welcoming, busy and having managed the tough task of keeping the pub feel whilst delivering extensive dining (no weird and wrong extensions etc). Staff were super pleasant, place was busy but relaxed and food was times exceptional, although range is traditional. Ale's of Tim Taylor etc were well kept and take a step out the back the view is amazing
