Took the opportunity to spend some quality time with my husband sans L'Enfant this Bank holiday weekend and booked an overnight stay at Holdsworth House Hotel. Agree with the previous reviewer regarding the location of the hotel, (it appears to have had an entire housing estate built round it at some point) but please do not let this put you off. As soon as you enter the building you could be miles away in the depths of the Yorkshire countryside. Check-in was efficient and welcoming. We chose a suite for our stay, room 16 named the Ayrton, and it did not disappoint. The room was immaculately clean and the décor neutral, but modern. I loved the little staircase to the bedroom in the sky, the velux window let in loads of light and enabled some really needed air conditioning as the weather was unseasonably warm (for Yorkshire in August) the canopied bed was sumptuous and the duvet luxurious and inviting. The hotel itself is an higgledy-piggledy confusion of rooms, but that adds to the charm. We located the bar and the beautiful garden and spent an happy couple of hours soaking up the afternoon sun. Other couples were partaking of the afternoon tea, which looked scrumptious, and will be on my list of must do's next time we visit. We booked a meal in the Michelin recommended restaurant. The service was refreshingly informal, which I loved. The restaurant staff were attentive and down to earth and handled a particularly difficult customer extremely well. As customer service manager's we thought they did an excellent service. The food is modern, but harks back to its Yorkshire roots of comforting and well executed dishes. We especially loved the poussin main course and the ham hock starter. After a faultless night's sleep, breakfast was welcoming and substantial. The poached eggs were a little on the small side, and the sausage might be a little bland, but the bloomer toast was lovely and the marmalade and jam in kilner jars was a lovely touch. Thank-you very much for a fabulous stay. A night's stay in a suite with dinner and wine £296.00 - a snip.
