The accommodation at Balgedie Lodge was excellent - very spacious and comfortable with lots of attention to detail. The sun room had fantastic views over the loch and was a great room to relax in after long walks in the area; the sunsets were fantastic. Lots to do around Kinross - plenty of good walks, Loch Leven Castle is worth a visit, and the Kelpies and Falkirk Wheel are close by. We were a large family group staying at both the lodge and the house and both properties easily accommodated all 19 of us. Both properties were immaculate. We would definitely stay here again. and would highly recommend both Balgedie Lodge and Balgedie House.
We - a family of 4 - spend a great time in Gate Lodge which - in contrary to many other cottages we stayed before - became a holiday-home for us. The cottage offers plenty of space and is tastefully furnished.
But let me describe the lodge in detail:
All beds are very comfortable, the master bedroom has a very nice view to the garden.
I must admit that I really enjoyed cooking there (usually I don't like it....) It was fully equipped with everything we needed and even more (a sandwich-maker, how cool is that?!) The big fridge and the big freezer were very useful as we could do a weekly shopping and store all the stuff in the kitchen. And of course a dishwasher and a washing machine (both very clean) make life easy while you're on holiday ;-) The view from the kitchen window even turned the washing up into delight :-)
It's a bright clean bathroom... for Germans the pull switches for light and shower are quite uncommon and without Shona's help we would probably not have been able to switch on the electric heater (yes, switches in a socket are also quite uncommon for us) but it was all working fine.
The living room:
2 comfortable sofas, a rocking chair, a TV, a ready-to-use- fireplace and a piano even with sheet music for beginners.... the kids had fun
The sun room:
Our favourite room. The views down to the lake are simply stunning and it was fascinating to see how they changed during the course of the day. We absolutely enjoyed sitting there, having a cup of tea, reading or playing one of the board games.
A charming well kept garden with lots and lots of colourful flowers - and of course - thistles. Unfortunately it was too cold to sit outside and make a BBQ or have lunch at the sheltered sitting area but I'm sure it would have been nice....
Many different attractions can be reached within 20 min (e.g. Falkland Palace, Loch Leven Castle, Dunfermline). Much to our surprise we found that even Edinburgh is only 35 minutes away. We went to North Queensferry by car (about 20 min), got on the train, crossed the amazing Forth Rail Bridge and arrived in Waverly Station within 15 minutes, it was just perfect. (Before our stay at Gate Lodge we spent 3 days in Edinburgh. We had a hotel in Leith and the bus took 30 minutes to take us to the old town....)
Many thanks to Shona for such a warm welcome and the tasty basket on the kitchen table. She was a perfect host, always helpful and even our daughter could understand her without any problems. We were all sad when we left and would absolutely not hesitate to come back on our next Scotland trip.
We had a wonderful stay! The weather was great, almost sunny and blue skies. We did a couple of trips to explore Scotland: In Fort William we took the Jacobite Steam Train; we saw Eilean Donan Castle; and at Loch Ness we found Nessie only in the souvenir shop! The cities of Edinburgh and St Andrews were great to visit too. Every day we were happy to return to the lovely and warm designed cottage with its great view over Loch Leven. The house as well as the garden is very well maintained. We really enjoyed the time here with our three children. The contact with Shona was always good and friendly and we always got a prompt answer. We will definitely recommend this to our friends. Thanks again for the wonderful week!
Great location, wonderful views. Cottage very comfortable and had everything we needed. Could not have asked for more. Friends looking to go to Scotland , try this one, you wont be disappointed.
Lovely comfortable accommodation. It has everything that we needed for a perfect relaxing week in Scotland. The views across the Loch must be seen. Location ideal for walking and cycling. Excellent pub just 10 minutes walk.
We had a lovely time. views were amazing, lots of local attractions. Spend most of our time in the conservatory. The Toll pub just 5 minutes along the road has the best food I have ever tasted. Would highly recommend.
This comfy and inviting cottage is ideally situated for anybody wanting to see and/or tour around Central Scotland. The view of Loch Leven from the sunroom is just lovely, and you could spend the whole week in there relaxing, reading and looking up at the view, but if you like a slightly more active holiday, the Loch Leven Heritage trail is so close by, and, or you can walk up the hill at the the back of Kinesswood, or take the path up from the Woodland Trust land near Scotlandwell - or go further afield, of course. If you like cycling, there are lovely country roads around nearby Bishop's Hill and East & West Lomond. Perth is half an hour's drive in one direction, and Edinburgh is half an hour in the other direction. The East Neuk of Fife, and St Andrews are 45 minutes away. There is no shortage of lovely scenery and interesting places to see in easy striking distance. There's a Co-op and Sainsburys in Kinross, just ten minutes drive away, and there other local shops in the villages and towns round about, including a small one in Kinesswood with newspapers and milk - a nice morning walk! The Balgedie Toll Tavern, serving lunches and evening meals, is a short walk away, as is Loch Leven's Larder, which is a lovely place for lunch, overlooking the loch, and with a path down to join the Heritage Trail close to the loch side. The cottage changed hands in 2016 and decor has been brightened and freshened up inside, it all has a very cosy feel and the changes have only further enhanced the house's appeal. The beds and bedding are comfortable, and the kitchen is well kitted out, including a dishwasher and washing machine. There's an undercover seating area outside in the lovely enclosed garden, and although parking space is tight, you can definitely get two cars in beside the house. The owner and housekeeper are very friendly and helpful and welcoming on arrival. It's a place you would want to return to, and we have - more than a few times - and we will again!
