“Avoid this overpriced dump!!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 20, 2010

The Windlestrae is one of those hotels built in the 1970's to cope with coach parties and golfers, and once you step through the doors it's like going back in time but not in a good way. The furniture, the rooms, the menu are all from the decade that taste forgot.
The drab depressing corridors prepare you for the drab depressing rooms which have the furniture, bathroom and blankets from the day it was built 30 odd years ago, some of the dust and cobwebs might not been original but they had certainly been there a long time.
Bar and restaurant food is the most basic pub food standard and twice the price it should be, drinks are expensive as well.
Although these problems are compounded by the truly dire level service rude surly and unhelpful staff get booking wrong, overcharge and generally make sure any stay is a miserable experience.
Avoid!

I stayed one night in this hotel last weekend for a friend’s wedding. I only paid 80GBP including breakfast but it seems everyone else paid the full 100GBP per night.
Staff were friendly and had all the wedding party rooms prepared for early check in at 1230 as the ceremony started at 1400 so had time to change. The room was a little disappointing, outdated and in need of a refurb, I have been in nicer Travelodge rooms. It was quite large but the furniture looked like it had been there since the 70’s. TV was a small portable CRT, the remote struggled to work and the picture on the tv was very snowy. Didn’t worry too much about this as I was there for the wedding.
The bathroom and indeed the whole room was clean enough but the gold taps with the plating worn off after about 30 years of cleaning and using them gave away the fact that Ted Heath was probably in power when they were installed. The toilet seat was made of cheap plastic. As I said I’ve seen better fittings in a Travelodge. The bed was comfortable enough though and plenty of pillows.
I see some other reviews mentioned the view from the room but mine and others only looked on to a wall or the roof of the swimming pool. I didn’t use the pool or gym but it looked OK.
The wedding went off without a hitch and what food we had, although simple fare, was nice enough. I hit the sack around 2am but I heard some of my fellow party goers kept the bar open until nearly 6am.
Breakfast was buffet style and decent enough. I did see someone else comment about the strange arrangement of the food containers which were not hinged. Was a bit awkward to try to juggle the lids but that’s a minor thing.
All in all nothing wrong with this hotel if you get it at the right rate and don’t expect much luxury.

We stayed overnight for a special occasion. The room was absolutely beautiful. Lovely views and spotless. The bed was huge and so comfy and clean. The staff on Reception were a delight to meet. Jean couldnt do enough for us and really made our stay memorable. Looking forward to returning soon.

We arrived at the hotel for a 2 night break to Kinross. We had been told that check in was 2pm but when we arrived at 2:45 the room was not ready for another half an hour.

Went to the bar in the afternoon and had a pleasent few drinks followed by a lovely dinner in the restaurant. Only critism of the restaurant was that they started setting up for breakfast before we had even recieved our main course. Left us feeling a little hurried!

Then went to the bar for the evening and could not fault the bar man (Frazer). Polite funny and chatty character, everything you could want when staying in a hotel. He even went to the effort of organising a chocolate eclair with an cocktail umbrella in as a birthday cake for me!

Unfortunatly our stay went down hill from there. Breakfast the next day was average but I was disappointed to not have the traditional scottish breakfast with haggis and Lorne sausage. I though this would be a marketing oppourtunity?

Having been out for dinner we went back to the bar in the evening to meet a very sour faced barmaid. Who made no effort to talk to us and insisted on calling time at 10:45 were we were then asked to finish our drinks in the corridor. I querried this as being a resident there should have been 24hr bar and was told there was not enough people drinking. Despite the fact there were 7 people all drinking in the bar. Appreciate this is not busy but having worked in the hotel industry for a number of years, this is an adequate turnover to maintain the residents bar. The barmaid was more interested in the evening closedown of the bar than her customers and had locked up and departed shortly after 11pm, leaving the customers sat in the corridor to finish their drinks. Shortly thereafter other residents approached the bar to find it closed.

On our day of departure we came down to breakfast and were told to take a seat in a restuarant full fo dirty tables. There seemed to be no effort made to clear tables and we finnaly found 1 table at the back of the restaurant. Again breakfast was very average! On our departure, the desk staff didn't make any enquires about our stay, very business like but lacking the traditional Scotish welcome.

As I say before our first day in the hotel was great but the attitude of several members of staff ruined it for us. I rememeber the windlestrae from several years ago when it had the wow factor over and above that of the green hotel. It has sadly lost this!

First the positives, the staff were very friendly, the food, breakfast, bar meal and restruant dinner were first class, Our room was in need of a refurb however the beds were very comfortable and clean. The swimming pool was an added bonus although this area could do with some TLC. All in all a lovely weekend. We would definately fgo again.

Thank you for taking the time to comment and I'm pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. We are aware some of our bedrooms would benefit from a makeover and this process is under way. Please let me know when you plan to return and I'll ensure you see what we've done so far.

We stayed for one night, dinner bed and breakfast. We've stayed before a couple of years ago. It was nice to see that a lot of money has been invested since then on furniture and carpeting in the public areas, with the lounge bar looking particularly nice.

Bedroom was spacious and very clean (though standard lamp didn't appear to work and had a stained shade). There was paint flaking off the ceiling above the bath, but on the plus side there was plenty of hot water and great water pressure.

Dinner was very good, and the service excellent. I thought breakfast the next morning wasn't quite in the same class though. There was a choice of grapefruit or prunes (the orange segments were finished and had not been replaced), the usual fruit juices, cereals, and cooked foods. The cooked foods - fried eggs, haggis (nice touch), bacon, tomatoes, beans, sausages - were in large containers with lids that you had to lift off with one hand but then you needed to hold your plate with the other and needed a third hand to transfer the food from the container onto the plate. The container lids should either have been hinged or there should have been a place in front of each container to safely lay down your plate. It's really just a small criticism but I'm sure one that could be easily resolved.

We didn't use the leisure facilities.
