“Two night stay”

An old hotel, a bit shabby. Comfortable tho, and the food was alright. No hot water on our second day. The leisure part of hotel had pool etc, unfortunately it was freezing! Jacuzzi was nice and warm tho. In all, not the best I've stayed in but ok for a couple of nights.

The check in at the hotel was as usual very good with someone there to help with the luggage. As we had just come from a very wet round of golf we were pleased to be shown where the drying room was in case we had anything to dry of.
Nice big clean modern room overlooking the green. After changing we went down to meet friends who we had persuaded to come to dine. We had talked many times of how good the food in the Bistro was and how good the menu was. Something different for everyday of the week.
As soon as we were pointed to our table we new things were not right. The table reserved for four only had three place settings, including chairs. The waitress had not followed us over so we took the extra place settings from the next table. The menu arrived in passing, only a few starters, mains, and sweets. When the waitress came back we asked for a bottle of wine and a jug of water. The wine arrived ok and we again asked for a jug of water. We sat there for 20 minuites drinking the wine and waiting for the waitress to bring the water and take the order. At last another waitress came by and asked if we were being seen to. We gave her our order and asked again for some water. I enquired about the menu, having stayed there many times we were used to a bigger menu, something we had told our friends about many times. The waitress said they had "shortages". We all settled on the same starter, not liking most of the others, and the mains were two hamburgers, one chicken and a pasta dish. We all said that we would not order these dishes but there was little else we liked.
When the starters arrived, prawn cocktail, it appeared as a round stack of mixed lettice and "prawns" (smallest ones I have ever seen), sitting on a bed of water.
The main courses, two hamburgers and chips, were OK but not even as good as the high street chains. The Pasta sauce was very thin, and the chichen overcooked and the roast potatoes unedible. We did not stay for the sweet course, prefering to get out of the Bistro and get a drink!!
Complaints to the manager were met with "apologies" and a reduction on the bill for the chicken dish. Unfortunately nothing can make up for the embarrassment my wife and I felt for dragging our friends along to such a poor meal.
After a good nights sleep we headed down to breakfast..........
No food left. We had some cereal hoping that the trays would be filled up. They were, with small plates of food brought out by the waitresess but in such small amounts that the people waiting to get food returned to their table until some more food came out. Meanwhile waitressess were bringing plates with breakfast on into the room and putting some breakfast items on and then going back into the kitchen. After 30 mins of queueing I managed one egg and a spoonful of beans, gave it to the waitress and asked her to keep it warm until the sausages and black pudding were ready. 10 mins. later the plate arrived with one sausage, "would you like another sausage" said the waitress? Yes pleas I answered and some black pudding. The sausage arrived and the black pudding after I had finnished my breakfast.
Meanwhile there were still people waiting for any breakfast items.
That evening we headed over to the Green Hotel for our dinner, and found out that some of the staff had been taken from the Windlestrae to help out due to large numbers of guests. We had a first class meal but we decided that we preferred the menu that we were used to in the past at the Windlestrae.
What a shame, we have always enjoyed our stay here prefering it to the Green. Will we recomend it or stay there again. I don't know, I would like to think that what happened was a one off and that the managemnet realise that they have to keep up the standards they have reached. One of the great things about the Windlestrae over the years has always been the bistro service and food. If this is going to suffer if staff are moved to cover the Green then the Windlestrae is going to loose a lot of custom.
Ratings for service based on Bistro experience. Front desk and bar sevice very good.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the green really nice, but expect some morning noise. Rooms at the back of the hot...

Awful stay- defiantly not worthy of the three stars, broken toilets, hideous smelling and rips in bedding. Only redeeming quality was the breakfast. This hotel would be perfect if it was rated either 1-0r-0 stars out of five, and the cost of the rooms far outweighs the actual
quality. Within the hotel the inclusive pool and leisure areas are defiantly worth the money- a great asset to the hotel. However we thought that the beauty/spa was inclusive as well however upon arrival we were informed of the (somewhat pricey) additional cost for the use of these facilities.

I stayed here recently for 4 nights with 3 of my grown up children. We went to the Commonwealth Games and did a bit of exploring. The hotel was well situated for this.
We ate in both the restaurant here and over at the Green Hotel. All food was great and the Eton Mess in Jock's Bar was the best I have had. The restaurant was a little chaotic but the staff were very helpful. Tip - choose a reserve option, 2 out of 4 of our meals turned out to have run out as did the hot chocolate.
Make sure you have some spa treatments, they were superb and excellent value for money.
Our rooms were very spacious and we all slept well. I reported the smell of damp 3 times and unfortunately nothing was done. It just seemed to be ignored until on the last evening I pushed for some sort of answer. I was told there had been an incident with the carpet a few weeks previously and that the maintenance manager would not change the carpet and unfortunately there was no other room available. I have followed up on this and was then told it was due to carpets having recently been cleaned!!!! I think not, I noticed a previous review also mentions a damp smell.
The main stair carpet is quite shabby which is a shame because it really is a very nice place to stay. There is mini golf and tennis, all free.

Room Tip: Don't have room 325, stinks of damp. Room 327 was ok except the damp smell is also in the hallwa...

Myself and a friend stayed here last week for a spa break - this included Dinner, Bed and breakfast, use of the spa facilities and a 30 minutes treatment each (this could be a neck, back and shoulder massage, facial or mini pedicure/ manicure). We didn't book this through the hotel so I dont know what they would charge but we got a very good deal with this.
On check in - we were told that check in was at 3pm but that we could use the spa facilities from 11 am. We turned up at 12 and the receptionist was very friendly and wewere told that our room was ready so we checked in straight away and were provided with robes and slippers in our room.
The room was very nice - slightly outdated but clean and tidy with a nice big window. the bathroom again was very clean however the bath Matt was mouldy.
On entering the spa again the staff were very friendly - the gym looked very good but we didn't use it. The changing rooms were small however the showers (only 2) were great ! the pool was a good size for relaxing the jacuzzi was amazing and it was great that you could turn it on whenever you wanted. The sauna and steam room were also fine. We fancied a cup of tea and again the staff were very nice and bought this though to the pool area for us so we could drink it next to the pool.
I opted for a neck, back and shoulder massage with Gemma. it was amazing !!! Gemma was very nice and I have to say it was one of the best massages I've had for a long time !
My friend had a facial with Louise and again she said this was amazing.
We had dinner in the hotel - This was very nice also and again the staff were very friendly.
We requested more tea bags and milk for the room and the staff were very quick to respond to any request.
We opted for breakfast in bed - this was unfortunately not great but was still nice ! the food was a bit too cold by the time it got to us and Milk, sauce and butter had all been forgotten so a couple of extra trips had to be made. i think had the food been hotter then it would have been fine.
the only downside of our stay was a fire alarm at 4am ! Whilst there isn't much the hotel can do about these things we did think it odd that there was no control of the situation by the staff member in charge we all just stood about in the parking lot with no one directing us. Thankfully it was really warm when we were out but I don't know if it would be normal practice to provide blankets etc to guests.
All in all a nice stay but made extra special by the really lovely happy staff

We had a very large, nice and clean room, with a small seating area and a huge window looking out on the green. The bed and pillows were very comfortable, but there wasn't a bedside light on one side of the bed. There was an old feel to the hotel, with a sense of personality, which we liked. However, on the downside, it was also quite worn.

There was a good sized pool, with a good sauna and Jacuzzi. This would have been even better if there had been a supply of cold drinking water available.

Breakfast items were good, but food kept running out, which led to long waits and the rest of the breakfast going cold. This made an otherwise very good breakfast substandard, and reduces from my overall score.

We had dinner in the Monty's restaurant. Food on the Saturday evening was excellent, with very generous portions. We had a starter, followed by steak with handmade chips, but I was too full to eat much of the main course. As I couldn't eat much of the main meal on the Saturday, I omitted a starter on the Sunday and ordered steak again. However, there was no steak left, and the handmade chips that I had looked exactly like the frozen chips that I buy from Tesco. The hotel clearly couldn't cope with the number of guests. This was very disappointing.

Staff were friendly and helpful, in the hotel, spa and restaurant.

My friend and I stayed here as a spa deal which included lunch, dinner, bed and breakfast and a 75 mins treatment. We also used the leisure facilities in the hotel. The welcome was cheery and we enjoyed all the meals. The food was of a good standard and a lot of interesting choices on the menu. We spent a lot of time using the leisure facilities, which were checked regularly and clean. However, where this hotel loses points is the lack of communication to costumers and between each other. We had a problem with the flush in the toilet, which was rectified quickly but we were made to feel pretty incompetent that we couldn't work a toilet, although they knew of this problem when we mentioned the room number. Then trying to find robes to use for the pool, we were told to ask several different people, could spa visitors not be given them at reception or in their rooms. Then when we went for both our dinner and breakfast communication between staff seemed to cause issues at our table and those around us, it just seemed to be lacking organisation and a wee bit of enthusiasm and a smile from staff. The hotel also needs a wee bit tlc as carpets were sellotaped where it was threadbare. Overall a nice experience and would visit again but just in need of a wee bit more enthusiasm, organisation and tlc.
