Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: The island fastness of Lochleven is associated with many colourful events and has been visited by countless distinguished personalities during its history. Some of those taking the boat across Loch Leven came of their own accord, including King Robert Bruce (in 1313 and 1323). Others were held prisoner within the castle's walls - such as Robert, the High Stewart, in 1369, two years before his coronation as Robert II, the first of the royal house of Stewart. But the castle will be forever associated in the memory with another Stewart sovereign, Mary Queen of Scots. She first visited in 1561 as a guest of the owner, Sir William Douglas. But her last stay, in 1567-8, was as his prisoner. It was at Lochleven that she was compelled to abdicate her throne in favour of her infant son, James VI. The castle walls held her for less than a year. In May 1568 she escaped across the loch and before that month was out she was in exile in England. She never saw her native land again. Accessed by small passenger boat. Sailings run on a shuttle basis to and from the island on demand. The trip is about ten minutes each way.

Indians are not known to preserve their monuments, yet Taj mahal and red fort are hundreds of years old and they are standing. This one is of the same age but is like a old burnt down house...I am surprised even people working there shared my opinion!

“Very peaceful”

The trip over and back on the boat is great as the boatmen are very knowledgeable. It was great to see where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned. Great place for a picnic.

“Lovely trip”

Just took our 9 year old daughter to the Castle. It was a bit of a chilly day, but hey, can't wait for the weather to get here! As members of historic Scotland, we didn't have anything to pay. The short boat ride, of about 10 minutes, was very picturesque, though a bit choppy! The island itself is smaller than expected, but perfectly formed. I can imagine coming back in the summer and taking a picnic to spend a bit longer on the island. The boat runs every 30 minutes and is also smaller than expected, but certainly added to the fun element! The kids will love it. Lots to do in the area, on the mainland, walks, cycle routes, park etc. we had lunch at the Bistro on the lock side, which was good value for money. The added bonus today was that they had a real log burner heating the restaurant - just what we needed. I will definitely return.

Soak in the atmosphere of this historic place.

The remoteness on the Island makes it very special.

Read some of the History of the Castle before going or you will not be able to fit it to a timeline.
