Fort Charlotte Guest House
Ranked #2 of 12 Lerwick B&B and Inns
Reviewed October 6, 2012

I have just returned from Lerwick and would like to recommend this B&B.The rooms were clean and comfortable with a good shower. The B&B is situated right in the heart of Lerwick and minutes from the seafront and bars and resturants. The breakfast was first class with fresh fruit welcoming and chatty hosts. The only problem I had was with the town bell which rang out on the hour every hour even during the night.Apart from this I would return again.

Room Tip: I stayed in room 1 above the kitchen and has a window which overlooked the lane to the rear.Keep the...

I spent 4 nights at the Fort Charlotte Guest House and certainly wouldn't think of staying anywhere else in Lerwick. There was personal but unobtrusive service and breakfasts to die for. Why go to a chain hotel to have a luke warm buffet breakfast when you can have an excellent breakfast cooked to order? This is where small hotels, guest houses and B&Bs score over the big hotels, and the Fort Charlotte must be in the premier league. The best compliment is when locals stay there after a family wedding. I had a spacious single room at the top of the house with plenty of hanging and storage space, complimentary toiletries and warmy fluffy towels. The room was also warm which was very welcome as the weather was a bit on the wet and windy side. And finally, it must be one of the most central locations in Lerwick, on the corner of Commercial Street (sounds grim but it's just the winding main shopping street) and Fort Charlotte Lane.

This has to be the best guest house we have ever had the pleasure of staying in. From the moment we arrived, Lynn and Jim couldnt have been more helpful-offering advice and tips for all the guests planning their days out and about. Our double room was spotlessly clean, beautifully looked after and had everything you could ask for, including its great location in the heart of Lerwick. Breakfast was delicious, with a wide range of foods on offer with nothing too much trouble for the hosts. Try out Jims fish and chip shop across the road also-its a treat! If and when we return to Shetland, we wont be staying anywhere else, it really is that good!

This B and B ticks all the boxes. The location is perfect with easy parking, the hosts are so friendly and helpful, the double room was a good size, the presentation of the room was very tasteful, modern and clean and the breakfast, delicious. The Shetlands is a perfect get away and this B and B provided excellent value for money

Room Tip: We asked for the largest room when booking ahead, as from experience we know B and B's in Englan...

Our group of 6 stayed at the Fort Charlotte Guest House for 4 nights in July 2012. It was a dream from the first booking (by phone) to our last good-byes. We chose it for its central location, style, price, and a couple of amenities like wifi. The hosts, Lynn and Jim, are among the best ever - lots of fun, smiles, stories, great visiting and restaurant advice, and just all-round info about Shetland (why are the ponies small? how do we get to Unst? where's the music store?) The breakfasts were really good, the rooms very attractive and easy to live in. The en-suite bathrooms were impeccable. Ours was Room 4 on the 3rd floor and we had a nice view of the main street. I think there are 3 rooms on the 2nd floor (counting the main floor as the 1st floor) and 2-3 rooms on the 3rd floor. Our group took 3 rooms and everyone in our group loved their rooms. Our group had 2 cars and we had no trouble parking around the corner. There were lots of shops and restaurants and other attractions within very easy walking distance. There's no elevator, but we had help getting our luggage up and down the stairs. There is a short uphill walk to get to the residence from the main street, then a few steps up to the main floor, but there was nothing our mostly-age-60 group couldn't easily handle.

In Shetland for the first time and chose Fort Charlotte Guest House because of the location and lots of great reviews on Tripadvisor. Stayed in two different twin rooms, both nice and clean with en suite. Breakfast was cooked on order and there was a lot to choose from. The owners were very helpful with tips for our sightseeing on Shetland, there were some things we would never have seen without their helpful advice. They even lent us a pair of raintrousers to keep in the car just in case. And all this for a very reasonable price. If I go back to Shetland this would be my first choice of where to stay, and I would recommend it to anyone! Lynne and Jim certainly provides a home away from home!

I have stayed in shetland many times and have found it to be very expensive for what you get. Shetland has a captive market during tourist season and they make the most of it. At Fort Charlotte Guest house that is certainly not the case. It is clean, modern and bright with good facilities. Free wi-fi, flat screen tv`s, good showers etc. Unlike the usual run of the mill bed for the night this place is a breath of fresh air. We were warmly welcomed on our arrival and nothing was any bother. There were 2 of us there on business and both rooms were excellent. Breakfast was cooked infront of us and was excellent. You are treated more like a friend than a guest. Next time I`m in Shetland I know where I will be staying..Well worth every penny which wasn`t a lot.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet although wi-fi is better on the ground and middle floors you get it all over.
