An ideal place to relax on a rainy day, with fantastic food and beverages, overlooking the boats in the dock. We were even treated to some live jazz music one afternoon over coffee and a pianist another day who played whilst waiting for his order. Great atmosphere, great food and friendly staff. Relax and enjoy.

Sorry but have to agree with the bad reviews here. Dirty tables, slow uninterested service, high prices. As you go into the cinema there is a sign that says (to the effect) please support us by buying your refreshments here, ie not bringing your own. Well, Mareel management, that lies entirely in your hands.

Had lunch in Mareel today was very disappointed first 2 choices I asked for they didn't have, the 3rd choice was meant to be ciabatta with mackerel pate which ended up being 1 slice of wholemeal bread with mackerel pate obviously didn't have ciabatta but didn't tell me at the time of ordering. The staff are very nice but obviously not coping when its busy. I love the atmosphere but will think twice about eating there again will just stick to a coffee or a glass of wine in future.

There appear to be loads of staff working here. Well, when I say working, I mean employed. There doesn't seem to be much work going on. The bar staff were milling around having lovely chats with each other about one thing and another, and then another, and then another... Eventually we got a bit proactive and asked for two drinks and two packets of crisps. The bill came to over £15. We then stood whilst the member of staff wandered off somewhere and when he came back we had to ask him for the drinks - "oh did you want them just now?"

Quite.

And again, we found the tables stacked up with dirty plates and we had to clear a space ourselves whilst the staff just carried on with their much more important chats behind the bar.

It's an expensive place, would it be too much to ask that staff didn't make you feel like you were majorly inconveniencing them by trying to buy some drinks?

The Mareel cafe bar is a wonderful place to meet friends, have business meetings or even to work on your laptop. The Wi-fi is free, and the atmosphere is light, bright and uplifting in the daytime while at night there's atmospheric lights created through a community-based art project. The small "meals" served after 5 pm are my personal favourite.
