We stayed at the Islesburgh House Hostel, Lerwick, from the 25th to the 27th July 2011. My party consisted of two adults and two children. The Islesburgh House Hostel is affiliated to the Scottish Youth Hostel Association (SYHA).
Islesburgh House reminded me of a large Scottish country house of a previous era, but updated to cater for 21st century travellers. We checked in at the Islesburgh Youth Hostel and were immediately impressed with the welcome and the quality of the place. For around £50 a night we got a four bedded room (en suite) with high tech security locks on the door. The public facilities are good, free WiFi (+ computer terminals with internet access), kitchen, TV room, games room, laundry, dining room etc. I believe this may be the best youth hostel of our Scottish trip. It is linked to the Islesburgh Community Centre across the street, which also has its own cafe, which is not hard to pay. Staff are really helpful and are able to advise on local amenities, historic sites etc.
If I ever return to Shetland I would have no hesitation in staying at the Islesburgh House Hostel.
