“Great site with Bishop's Palace and Cathedral”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

Entrance is combined with the Bishop's palace across the road which makes a very interesting visit, A lot of the Earl's palace was cordoned off for repairs but there were still some dark and atmospheric rooms to visit, the bishops palace feels more like a castle.. Not a great deal of information available or staff to help with any questions, but combined with the Bishop's palace and the Cathedral opposite the whole area is a great historical site.
Entrance is free to English Heritage members.

“Wake up Historic Scotland!”
Reviewed September 21, 2012

Not a good advertisement for the Historic Scotland Brand with poor interpretation boards less than helpful staff and not really representing value for money for the entrance fee.

“Under Repair”
Reviewed September 17, 2012

clear information boards and a lot to see. Unfortunately, on our visit it was half closed off as scaffolding was being erected. Necessary but annoying

A nice walk around with imformative placards along the way. These ruins would be a child's delight. Dream of yesteryear ! ! !

“Must see”
Reviewed August 30, 2012

The Earls palace was built by Earl Patrick who's father was Earl Robert Stewart the illegitimate son of James V. Earl Robert ruled as Earl of Orkney from 1568 when he was given the lands of revenues of the Northern Isles. His son took the title following his fathers death in 1593 and built this palace using slave labour - he was eventually put on trial and executed in 1615. The remains of the palace are beautiful, it must have been a magnificant building. Several people lived in the palace until 1671 when it became the bishop's residence but by 1688 the palace passed out of use and was left to fall into ruin. Well worth a visit.
