“Such a good time we came back for more!”
Reviewed July 17, 2013

We had such a good time with Orkney Uncovered last year that we decided to return this year, partly to enjoy going back over some familiar ground and partly to explore some new. Kinlay is a leader in the field: passionate about his subject and with so much knowledge at his fingertips, yet he knows how to remain in the background so as to allow the objects and the landscape to speak for themselves. You'd be hard pressed to find a guide more committed, enthusiastic and professional as Kinlay Francis. And yes, we'll be back for more!

“Orkney Explorer Tour - Amazing!!”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

We booked Orkney Uncovered for a full day private tour while visiting Orkney. We chose to go for a tour that covers the best Orkney has to offer in one day. Kinlay our guide was amazing and was so passionate about Orkney. We visited all the sites including Skara Brae. Ring of Brodgar, Scapa Flow, St Magnus Cathedral, Wideford Hill, Kitcheners Memorial, Cliffs of Yesnaby etc etc. We even tried some local foods and Orkney Wine which was an interesting change to the usual wines you buy.

Every part of our day was expertly arranged with Kinlay and Kirsty from Orkney Uncovered. We even got our own tailored tour itineraries on the day. Kinlay also provided us with Evian water and some delcious tasting Orkney snacks, shortbread and fudge.

Finally dont believe these rubbish BBC Weather reports you see about Orkney. The weather was 24oc and beautiful sunshine!

Highly recommend Orkney Uncovered, one tip to book in advance as they are very popular!

“Best way to see Orkney”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

Six of us from a cruise ship booked a day tour in Kirkwall Scotland in the Orkney Islands. Our tour guide was Kinlay Francis – (orkneyuncovered.co.uk). Kinlay made sure that we saw many interesting sights including the ruins of the Neolithic village at Skara Brae, a furnished mansion nearby, standing stones that predate Stonehenge as well as the WWII British fleet anchorage at Scapa Flow along with the Churchill Barriers and Italian POW chapel. Also we had a nice lunch at a local inn. Kinlay was most knowledgeable in all facets of Scottish history especially regarding the Orkney Islands. We thoroughly enjoyed our day and I would recommend him highly.

Dear Ed,

Many thanks for the excellent review. We greatly appreciate the feedback. I am glad you had a great days touring on Orkney. There is so much to see in Orkney and I am glad I could show you round Skara Brae and Skaill House.

I am glad you enjoyed your lunch at the Standing Stones Hotel, I remember that the coconut and sweet potato soup was excellent. We hope that you enjoyed the rest of your cruise on the delightful Prinsendam and we would welcome you back to Orkney in the future.

Kind regards,

Kinlay and Kirsty Francis

“Excellent Private Cruise Tour!”
Reviewed July 7, 2013

We recently booked a private tour with Orkney Uncovered while visiting Orkney as a stop off on our cruise holiday. We spoke with Kinlay and Kirsty in advance to arrange our tour to encompass the best Orkney has to offer in a day. A tall order, but not for Orkney Uncovered who were fabulous.

We visited many amazing sites including the Barony Mill a working bread mill near a lovely scenic village called Birsay. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the former WWII Royal Navy Airfield called Twatt! We saw inside an air raid shelter and around the old control tower. Quite incredible that the runways are still clearly visible under the grassy surface 70+ years later.

We then visited the stone age village of Skara Brae where Kinlay took us on an amazing tour of this 5000 year old new stone age site. We loved the beach of Skaill and took our shoes off for a quick dip in the cool Atlantic waters. Kinlay provided us with some delicious Orkney syrup biscuits and bottled water to keep us hydrated, which was a nice touch.

We stopped for a good bite to eat at a local hotel which did a very good sweet potato and coconut soup before heading off to see the glorious Scapa Flow. I have to say at this point that Kinlay is a mountain of knowledge and how he has learned so much about Orkney is quite outstanding.

One of our final sites to visit was the Italian Chapel which was just beautiful sitting in a lonely position overlooking the sea. Kinlay showed us around the full chapel and gave us a heart warming story about the lives of the Italian POWs and their interaction with the local Orkney people.

We briefly stopped at Orkney wine to try some of the local wine and ports and try the delicious local ice cream. We highly recommend lemon curd and toffee fudge Orkney ice cream.

We then head back to our cruise ship for the next part of our voyage. A thoroughly wonderful day of touring with a truly excellent and passionate guide.

Many thanks Kinlay we will be back!

Dear Ruby,

Thank you very much for your top class review we really appreciate the feedback. We certainly did fit a lot in for your private day tour and I am glad you managed to see everything you wanted and much more.

You were both very brave going for a dip in the chilly Atlantic waters of Skaill beach. This beach is a great place for views from Skara Brae Neolithic Village.

Thank you very much for the Orkney Ice Cream it was delicious and yes my favourite is lemon curd as well!

Thank you again for booking with Orkney Uncovered and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Kind regards,

Kinlay

“Orkney Experience”
Reviewed July 7, 2013

Orkney uncovered is a private tour company operated by a husdband and wife team, Kinlay and Kirsty Francis, specialising in WWI & WWII tours but providing private tours for all Orkney visitor sights and attractions.
We were a group of three Scots visiting Orkney for the first time, one of our party is a ex-fisherman so had spent a lttle time sheltering there in the past. I approached Orkney Uncovered having read the reviews on Trip Advisor and was not disappointed. From the start of my enquiries I was impressed with the care taken and communication provided to ensure that our tour was exactly what we wanted. We requested a day tour that took in WWII sites, neolithic sites and gave us an insight into the natural beauty and wildlife of Orkney. Kinlay provided a bespoke tour itinerary which was tailored to our requirements and the day spent touring Orkney with Kinlay was excellent and highly recommended. Kinlay specialises in Naval and Wartime history but has an in depth knowledge of Orkney history in general and gave us a grand day out visiting key sites all over the mainland. We would very much like to vist Orkney again in the near future and would certainly book another tour.
We join with all the other reviewers in providing an excellent review for this Private Tour, not to be missed if you are visiting Orkney.
