This quaint hotel has a cozy feel and the proprietor couldn't be more welcoming. Our room was nicely and freshly decorated with antiques, as was the entire building. The onsite bar is intimate and we enjoyed warming ourselves in front of the fireplace after sight-seeing on a cold day in Orkney. The dining area adjoining the bar is also lovely, the meals are fantastic and the portions more than generous! The location is perfect for touring the centre of the city on foot. We were pleased to have free parking provided behind the hotel. Unfortunately, the water pressure in the shower in our room was lower than we would have liked as was the water temperature. Overall, though, we very much enjoyed our stay here.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- This hotel offers simple comforts but is still in the top two or three places to stay in Kirkwall. In 1824, it was built just outside Kirkwall by a retired sea captain, and became Orkney’s first hospital in 1845. Today, owners Gifford Leslie and Robert Dawson provide a warm welcome and comfortable guest rooms. Each with a shower-only bathroom. The property has been refurbished in the past few years and it now fresh and inviting. Cost-conscious meals are served in a small restaurant and bar. Fully licensed to sell alcohol, the hotel attracts both locals and visitors. The West End Hotel, in many ways, is the ideal blend of old and new. ... more less
