This was not the most welcoming start to my holiday in Orkney. On arrival at the guest house there was no indication as to which room had been allocated and by a process of elimination and trying doors we eventually found a room which appeared to fit out requirements. The room was fine except we had no hot water in the shower, on mentioning this to the proprietor I was told very sharply that we were doing something wrong and that she would fix it and then we were to leave it alone. I would of thought that if the shower was temperamental then maybe instructions would have been helpful particularly as there was no kind of reception to contact with any problems. The breakfast was adequate but again the service was very surly and unfriendly. To experience a friendly atmosphere I would definitely look for other accommodation.

We stayed at Polrudden Guest house for two nights in June. We arrived late and were pre advised which room was to be ours. All went smooth. Great breakfast. Would stay here again. Convenient location to downtown Kirkwall

We arrived here on the late ferry from Aberdeen at about 11.30pm. The front door of the guesthouse was unlocked but there was no-one around to welcome us. We were tired after leaving home at 5.00 am for an early morning flight to Aberdeen. There was no note anywhere to greet us - nothing to advise us about which room we had been allocated. We tentatively opened one door, which was the dining room. We were not sure what to do. Another couple also arrived from the same ferry and they suddenly noticed two keys in two of the doors of the downstairs rooms. We investigated and decided that these must be our rooms. So we slept here without actually knowing that these were our allocated rooms!!!!! It was a very weird and unnerving experience!!!

The next morning our host Linda introduced herself as if nothing unusual had happened the previous night! Breakfast consisted of fruit salad, which included some tinned fruit, cereal and natural yogurt. The cooked breakfast was without choice - a 'take it or leave it' affair. One fried egg, bacon, sausage and tomato. Scrambled egg was not an option and there was no menu to allow for choice!

Our room was clean, there was plenty of hot water, the beds were comfortable and we had a rationed amount of tea/coffee sachets with an ungenerous amount of milks. It was okay.

My recommendation would be, that although this guesthouse is adequate, it would be worthwhile checking for more hospitable accommodation elsewhere in Kirkwall.

Room Tip: Look for a room elsewhere!!!!!! To arrive at a place without anyone to show you to your room is a m...

Am here just now. Room very comfortable and spotless, as is en suite bathroom. Nice breakfast and pleasant landlady.

No idea of prices as company has booked and paid for it.

Have tried to book a future trip for some colleagues, but it's full on the dates I need - so they must be doing something right?

Our family stayed in two rooms for three nights in the Polrudden Guest House, which was full at that time. Our room was fairly large, nicely furnished and very comfortable. Breakfast was plentiful and delicious. Being able to easily walk to town through the nearby park was enjoyable. We had a rental car and traveled all over the Mainland to the archeological sites each day and being in Kirkwall was very convenient. Linda is a wonderful hostess and manages her Guest House with friendliness and good humor.

My stay at the Polrudden Guest House was a mediocre yet expensive offering. The decor, if carbon dated, would probably date back to Skara Brae or any one of the numerous Neolithic offerings within Orkney. That said, Skara Brae was devoid of the horrors of thick dark shag carpet, an abundance of wood chip and a severe lack of soundproofing!

The service was cold and unattentive. The tone was more of annoyance and inconvenience, as opposed to welcoming. Did I say it was expensive? I feel the Polrudden has cruised along for years on the ample back of business travellers' who have no real reason to complain, as long as the expenses claims were approved.

Orkney is a beautiful island but tainted with poor service and lacklustre accommodation. It is no wonder that less people are choosing to 'staycate' these days. On a positive note, the cooked breakfast was fine but there was no choice given in terms of type of egg or accompaniment. There was also Wifi but it didn't always work. When it did, it only served to remove you from your drab surroundings and wish of better accommodation.

It won't be my last time in Orkney but it will be my last time at the Polrudden Guest House.

Room Tip: Go somewhere other than the Polrudden.

We stayed at the Polrudden Guest House with 2 young children and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We arrived late in the evening (around 11pm) off the boat from Shetland on our first night but this was no problem.

The room was clean, and comfortable, if a little cramped (but we did have 3 beds between the 4 of us) and Linda offered to store the campbed during the days to give us more space. The cooked breakfasts were excellent.

The location is great for arrivals off the ferry - 5 minutes drive from the terminal. It's also a pleasant 10 minute stroll into town.

We'd definitely stay here again...
