My wife and I stayed nine nights (11-19 June, 2013) at "Straigona", using it as our base for exploration of Orkney, for which a car is essential. We rate "Straigona" top-notch and intend to return there.
Location - ideal because central; 3 miles SE of Kirkwall; close to airport, but noise infrequent and not intrusive.
Breakfast - excellent and substantial, with all ingredients from Orkney sources; full range of choices, incl. kippers; delicious home-bakes - flapjacks, muffins and oatcakes; packed lunches available, of same high quality as breakfasts.
Rooms - light, airy, spacious and comfortable; plenty of storage; en suite bathroom; beautiful view from our room "Inganess".
Hosts - Mike and Julie Rickards are what really make "Straigona" a top-notch B&B: their warmth, humour and friendliness made us feel instantly at home and they are a fount of detailed and accurate information about all that Orkney has to interest visitors. Also, if you are a cat-lover, there are three gorgeous ones here, two of them very sociable.
Car Hire - excellent service from Colin Gregg Cars (Kirkwall); will pick you up from airport; cheaper than the on-airport company.

We feel very lucky to have found Straigona.

Mike and Julie were amazing hosts.

The rooms were larger than most places, well maintained, with a binder containing lots of useful information, and little snacks to enjoy. Being a local, Julie is very knowledgable about the area, and Mike is extremely funny, although he tries to cover it up with a straight face.

The food is excellent, and they were the first I've seen that offer dinners, etc., upon request. Oh, and can they bake! If you like an evening snack, this is the place to stay.

We also learned about the annual Ba' event, and the marriage ritual of "blackening".

My wife and I are now talking about our next trip to Scotland, and a return visit to the Orkneys, and Straigona is sure to be part of the plan. We stayed 4 days at Straigona, but it went so fast, we hope to stay longer next time.

Room Tip: Both units we had were excellent.

Julie and Mike were friendly and welcoming right from the off, even though I arrived at about midnight (the Aberdeen ferry was a bit late docking). My room was very clean and comfortable, with an excellent view, as I discovered in the morning. The food was delicious, although you'll need a good appetite if you tick many of the (many) options for breakfast! One of the friendliest and most professionally run B&Bs I've come across.

Staying with Julie and Mike was one of the highlights of our three week trip to Scotland. They could not have been more helpful and good humored, going far beyond our expectations in every way. The food was delicious and plentiful with baked goodies available 24/7. The accommodations were very comfortable and every consideration in the way of toiletries was anticipated. They were the consummate hosts despite Julie having sprained her ankle just before our arrival. Our only complaint is that we could not have stayed longer than our four days.

Julie was very helpful with local knowledge. As a long term sufferer of a bad back I found the bed was very very comfortable. The cleanest B&B we've ever stayed in. Very convenient for the airport but don't worry about noise this is Orkney!

Fresh baking, considerate hosts, and plenty of small touches which are often missing: black out blinds for those super bright Orkney summer nights, useful practical range of toiletries, maps and local books.

Professional, easy going and friendly hosts with very standards and clear ideas of how they think a B&B should be run! Ask Julie for her home made vegetarian sausage for breakfast, whether you are a vegetarian or not.

You will need a car as it is a 5 minute drive out of Kirkwall.
