“Would stay here again”

This is a lovely family run hotel. From the moment we arrived we felt totally at home. the staff were welcoming and friendly. They were helpful in pointing out places of interest to visit.
Our room was in the new extension and had a super view of the harbour. It was very spacious and had an extremely comfortable bed!
The ensuite was also a generous size and nicely decorated. The room was spotlessly clean and nice and warm.
Breakfast was great and really set us up for the day, whether it was full Scottish, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, kippers or any combination of a range of items. The porridge was very welcome too!
We ate in the restaurant several times and were happy with our meals on all occasions. The portion sizes were large and there was plenty of choice.
We stayed for five nights and had no complaints at all. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to others.

The thing that you immediately notice about the Ayre Hotel is the friendliness of the staff. From the moment you enter there is a real feeling of welcome.

The hotel has good facilities and it is well situated in the harbour area of Kirkwall. Parking is good and the hotel has a nice bar and restaurant. WiFi is good throughout the hotel.

I had breakfast and it was very good - there was something for everyone. The only item I'd change is the sausage which let the breakfast down a little bit - a quality butcher's sausage would have made a real difference.

My room was clean and well equipped. One small area for improvement is the TV. At any volume level the speaker is annoyingly tinny and rattled a bit - something evident in less expensive TVs.

All in all a good hotel - I'd certainly visit again and recommend it to others.

This is a very late review of our 3-day trip to Kirkwall in June. I travelled with my teenage daughter and we stayed in a twin room overlooking the harbour. The room was very comfortable and super-clean, with a great bathroom and excellent wi-fi. The hotel was much bigger than we expected, but despite its size it was very quiet and only the very late sunset (almost midnight!) kept us awake at night.

There was a good selection from the buffet at breakfast, and we were also able to order eggs with salmon. Delicious! Dinner in the hotel restaurant was also very filling - we had the steak and ale pie and the roast of the day.

The staff were very friendly and always greeted us as we came and went during the day.

We enjoyed our stay at the Ayre Hotel and would certainly stay again.

We have just returned from yet another great stay at the Ayre Hotel. Our room was in the new annexe (room 51) and faced the harbour. It was spotless, with a large comfortable bed which made for a great night sleep. The free wi-fi was quick with a great signal. The en suite was a decent size and the power shower a great way to blow the cobwebs off in the morning before breakfast. Speaking of breakfast it too was faultless with both the full Scottish breakfast as well as the Orkney Smoked Salmon with scrambled egg (with a little Grimster cheese from the buffet crumbled over it :-) ) just delicious.
There is a nice varied selection on the menu and the Bar and Restaurant menu are available where ever you decide to sit. As always the steak and ale pie was lovely, with top quality chunks beef used in the filling. The chicken stuffed with haggis, served with a creamy whisky sauce was also a highlight. Amongst the starters the trio of Orkney seafood was great, as was the Mushroom Romaine (which I tried for the first time). A special mention has to go to the Scapa Special real ale which goes down a treat.
The staff as always were very welcoming and couldn't have been more helpful. So thanks again to all the team at the Ayre Hotel we will definitely be returning again real soon
p.s. The next time we stay we will try and stay in one of the newly refurbished rooms in the main building just to see what they are like. (not that we could fault the room we stayed in)

We stayed three nights at the Ayre Hotel and would highly recommend it. We received a very warm welcome. The room was very comfortable and with a sea view and the food was very good. As was the service. The best thing, however was the friendly caring atmosphere which was there all the time. Everyone spoke.

This is a family establishment. They were so helpful and responsive when planning my trip to Kirkwall. Clean, comfy room with a view of the sea and harbour. Nice breakfast available, and dinner in the restaurant was also very good. Well within walking distance of everything. Quiet location.

OK, I normally stay elsewhere in Orkney, this time it was fully booked and I looked at reviews in TA for an alternative and up popped the Ayre.

Fine hotel, lovely room overlooking the harbour, it was warm and inviting, with nice decor. I was advised that wifi was included in rate, good sized TV, nice hospitality tray, comfy beds, well appointed room and bathroom. Well done, first impressions 10/10.

Dinner was a bit of a mixed bag, no separate dining room, that was a bit disappointing, although not in public bar, people can come in and have a drink whilst you were eating.

Starters: (Seafood Trio) was excellent, well presented and plenty of it, will give you 10/10 here, faultless.

Mains: I asked for the £21 fillet steak – when asked I requested that it be cooked rare, however it was cooked blu, clearly underdone with uncooked dark red meat inside the fillet. As I was dining with colleagues, I didn't want to be left plateless whilst it was rectified so I just got on with it.. When asked by the young waitress if all was OK, I highlighted the fault and this and she must of thought this was a compliment as she said cool, I'll tell the chef. It was nothing special, a fillet steak with fried onion rings and chips and a serving of mixed veg, could of been better presented.

Breakfast: Big letdown, 2 what looked like weatherbeaten poached eggs with the white of the egg all over the plate served with thick grey watery bacon.

As I said, the Ayre Hotel is lovely, well appointed with good features with a nice welcome but the food is as you would get in most restaurants, in this case a dining room attached to a lounge bar.

Room Tip: Ask for a harbour view room
