“Friendly and Welcoming”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

This was my first trip to Orkney and the Ayre Hotel was recommended to me. My friends and I
found the staff very helpful and friendly. The hotel was well equipment and clean with ample space in the rooms. The breakfast and dinner menu has plenty of choices for every taste buds. We would have no hesitation staying there again.

We were booked into the hotel as part of the Orkney Archaeology package. The staff were all very efficient friendly and helpful. The food was excellent. The rooms were pleasant and well maintained. I can recommend this hotel be it for business or leisure.

We and two of our adult children stayed here for our 10 day holiday with Orkney Archaology Tours. The tour was excellent, and the hotel really was a good surprise: we were impressed with the lavish quantities of food on offer for both breakfast and dinner. Our two children were especially delghted with the fillet steak and the fresh seafood. The menu could be improved by including some more imaginative vegetarian dishes, and the dessert menu needs some lighter options to add variety. The rooms were very clean and a good size, as were the ensuite shower rooms. We would have liked a bath instead of just a fixed shower. The beds were excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful, even when extremely busy. Overall we were very happy to stay here, and the service the hotel had to offer really helped our enjoyment of the holiday.

Room Tip: If you would prefer a bath to a shower, you should ask for a room with one!

I stayed here for one night on business this week. I received a warm welcome from reception when I checked in. The room was basic but perfectly adequate. A very comfortable bed and the only real minus point was the lack of decent double glazing. My room was at the front of the hotel overlooking the harbour and from 6am onwards there was a fair bit of noise coming from the ferries etc on the pier. Having said that, a view over the harbour was worth it.

Breakfast is served in what looks like a function room and it is a bit impersonal. The food was fine although the waiting staff were not particularly chatty.

No real problems and I would happily stay again on a business trip though not for a special weekend or holiday.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have a good view but be aware of noise from the road and harbour.

The Ayre hotel was a lovely friendly hotel, situated a stone's throw away from Kirkwall town centre. Hatston ferry terminal is fairly close. The rooms were airy and spacious, the staff friendly, and the food was good (both breakfasts and dinners). The dinners on offer were not too pricey, and there was a choice of eating them in the restaurant or pub area. I can recommend the gammon steak, steak and ale pie and the lasagne!

There is adequate parking at the front of the hotel, plus a main car park. The hotel offer a laundry service which is not too expensive, as if you are walking / cycling / working outside on the Orkneys - there is a high chance of getting wet and muddy!

There is a nice pub attached to the hotel, where they serve excellent ales from local breweries. If you like real ales, try the Scapa Special - it is a light, hoppy beer which is highly drinkable!

This was a one night stop-over en route to one of the smaller islands in Orkney. I had booked in advance was impressed by the warmth of that experience. Received warmly, staff could not do enough to look after my needs and comfort - wonderful dinner in a happy and busy restaurant - local families clearly eating there and enjoying the experience. I certainly did! Good high standard room with lovely harbour views ......... and it was raining outside so all the more wonderful!!

Room Tip: Nook well in advance and ask for a harbour view room!

We spent a smashing week based in Kirkwall with Orkney Archaeology Tours. The Ayre Hotel is a stone's throw from the bus station, harbour, St Magnus Cathedral and town centre. Our room at the Ayre was quiet (not always a given), spotlessly clean and well-appointed (huge bed), with a view north over the harbour. The staff were always cheerful and quietly courteous. The restaurant food was excellent (especially the seafood starters and mains) and I'd recommend the Scapa Special bitter! There was a good, freshly-cooked breakfast to set us up for busy days and plenty of choice (another recommendation: the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon).

The manager was also very considerate regards our later-than-planned arrival (flight delays and a missed connection).

I'd certainly return to the hotel if visitng Kirwall again.
