The Ayre hotel is a great place to stay. Food is great with plenty of choice. Staff friendly, rooms nice, overlooks the sea.
Have had many visits to this hotel and never tire of the place

Room Tip: The new part of the building is best.

This is a good hotel! We stayed here three nights and had a room overlooking the harbour. The room was a good size and beautifully furnished. Clearly it had been recently refurbished and the hotel has done a very good job. The staff are very helpful and friendly.

On the first night of our stay, we arrived late off the ferry from Lerwick, and ventured into the hotel bar. Our first impression was of a rough drinking den, but all the locals were really friendly and within a few minutes you realised the place had a great atmosphere. We ate at the restaurant on one of the evenings and the food was homely and of a good standard.

We don’t know what the other hotels in Kirkwall are like, but they would have to be very, very good to beat the Ayre Hotel.

Stayed again for 5 nights and was very impressed with the refurbished room we had on first floor. New ensuite with bath/shower also new furniture/bed.Breakfast was good with plenty of choice and service was very good. We ate in the restaurant 3 nights and was very happy with choice, service and friendly staff/most of them from our last visit we remembered! The bar always has locals ready for a chat.Highly recomended for a stay, will return soon.

We found this to be a clean, modern hotel & had a room with a sea view and an amazing power shower in the extension. The staff were pleasant, welcoming & helpful & has already been stated in other reviews the food was great. We had no complaints but if there had been a problem I am sure that it would have been quickly sorted out for us. We had a wonderful week here and would be happy to return again.

The picture of this hotel on the brochureis rather misleading as it is on busy street on one side and a back street on the other. The rooms were acceptable and the staff although generally helpful had some strange ideas particularly about how to serve breakfast - porridge and cooked breakfast for the same person brought to the table at the same time and cooked breakfast delivered before the diner had finiished the cereal/fruit starter. The dining room was really a pub and there was nowhere to sit and relax after eating in the evening. Chips were delivered with every meal whether they appeared on the menu or not. My friend and i stayed 6 nights and would not stay here again

Room Tip: Can't advise as at the front would be road noise and at the back the car park/bar created noise

The Ayre hotel is well located close to the centre of Orkney. The staff were very helpful and friendly and our annex room was clean and comfortable, although more wardrobe space would have been good for a week long stay. The continental breakfast buffet was disapoointing, but the freshly cooked dishes for breakfast were very good. Evening meals were adequate but uninspiring and old fashioned, the menu really needs a make over. I agree with the previous reviewer who suggested the nearby Shore hotel's restaurant - it was much better at a similar price

Our stay here was organised as part of the Orkney Archaeology tours 10 day package. Our room in the annexe was spacious, clean and well maintained and it was good to have an en suite bathroom with an openable window rather than just a fan. We also had a good view over the harbour. The staff were friendly and efficient. The food was abundant though variable in quality at times. Better lounge facilities for residents would be good.
