“Great place to stay”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

I chose this B&B mainly due to its location on the corner of the harbour in Kirkwall. The walk into Kirkwall's Broad St is no more than 5 mins away and the views from the breakfast room of the harbour are just lovely.

Host was lovely and friendly and offered a great breakfast of anything from porridge, cereal and fresh fruit to a full cooked breakfast (or anything you fancied on request)

Twin room was en suite and fresh and clean - beds made daily.

House was modern and spacious with a private lounge for guests also with a view across the harbour. House has wifi.

It would be difficult to find a better B&B for a stay in Kirkwall.

We booked to stay at Benmora for our 2 night stay in Kirkwall based on the comments on here. I was not disappointed. Carolyn is truly the most friendly, congenial host. The B&B is spotless and our room along with the whole house appeared brand new. It is only a 5 minute walk into Kirkwall and has stunning views. The breakfasts were also fantastic, with plenty of choice and truly delicious, fresh and tasty food, including fresh strawberries, yoghurts and other fruits. Breakfast is available from 7.15am, but would be served earlier if you need an early start. As we were not leaving until the midnight ferry, we were able to leave our bags, given a key to the house and use of the lounge all day, which was such a great benefit. I would definitely recommend this B&B and will be staying again.

We stayed at Benmora for a week in early May and loved this B&B. It was one of the best we have ever stayed in. We really enjoyed our time here and got to see a lot on the islands, despite the very poor weather we had while we were there.

Location: The main part of Kirkwall and the tourist sites are only a short walk (about five minutes) away. The B&B is located on a road next to the harbour, and there are excellent views over it from the dining room. It's also a pleasant walk following the harbour.

Beds/Rooms: Carolyn is attentive to detail. The bed was very comfortable. The room was clean and cleaned daily, and it was the small things that mattered - biscuits, spotlessly cleaned, fresh towels, etc. We had a modern television in the room. The shower was fine -- good water pressure and temperature.

Shared Room: There was a shared room with a television, books, glasses, and other items for visitors. There's also an abundance of tourism books and brochures. We didn't need to make use of it as we spent most of our time out and exploring.

Breakfast: Delicious and filling start to the day. You could choose what you wanted. Fresh fruit, yogurt, juice, cereals, tea/coffee, cooked food (bacon, sausage, mushroom, beans, black pudding, eggs...), etc.

Service: Carolyn was very friendly and accommodating. On our last day, we had to leave at about 6:30 to make our ferry. She packed us breakfasts to take with us on the ferries. These were much appreciated and enjoyed on our trip back to the mainland.

Parking: Available at the house.

Tips: I had problem with my phone signal on the island, so I could not ring or text to let her know when we'd arrive (although I tried many times). I had a wrong phone setting switched on which didn't connect to older phone networks. Although she was in when we arrived (at about 17:00), we didn't need to wait, and I don't think she minded. But I thought I'd put this here....there is phone signal on the island and make sure you don't have something switched on where it cannot pick up older phone signals.

I looked on Tripadvisor for restaurants before arriving, and Helgi's lives up to expectations. It's also on the harbour just below the B&B. We also ate at The Shore, but we did not like it. We also had a meal at the Hotel on the harbour front, but the service here was not good and the manager seemed to be over-bearing with his staff and disorganised....he took the bartender off the bar to help him and four other staff members to sort out a table for eight people, which meant drinks were building up and not fulfilled for those eating.

Get the Orkney explorer card to save money on some of the main attractions. We loved all of these attractions and also visited additional ones and cairns. Don't forget to visit the Grainbank Earth House near the Artak Jeweller's just outside Kirkwall. Also, take advantage of the walks. We walked around Yasnby to see sea stacks and had a pleasant (albeit a little long) walk on Hoy to the Old Man of Hoy...and don't forget to see the Dwarfie Stone on Hoy.

Room Tip: Our room was the double bedroom. It was nice, and we had a lot of room. I didn't see the other r...

Views over the marina and harbour to Kirkall completed a great stay. The room, lounge and dining room were of the best quality. (The showers put some 4* hotels to shame). Carolyn made us feel at home and cooked a wonderfull breakfast. Benmora is just a short walk from the centre of Kirkwall. I am just sorry we could not stay longer.

this is a very clean and very nice B&B. Near to center, with a great view over the habour. The houselady ist extremly kind and helpful. We had a very early ship back to Scrabster, and we got a "breakfast-pack" from her prepared with fresh sliced fruits, sandwich and joghurt. We recommend this B&B. thanks for this nice stay.
