The Smiddy has everything you need for a week's stay. There were just the two of us so plenty of space and having three shower rooms was a bonus as one shower (the Jacuzzi shower/bath) was not working when we were there.
The welcome pack of food items was a really lovely extra - an indication of the high quality experience at The Smiddy.
It would help guests if a list of places available to leave luggage could be displayed in the house or on-line. Our flight wasn't until 4pm and a late departure wasn't possible. It took us a while to find somewhere to leave our cases as neither the bus station or ferry terminal had luggage lockers.
The remoteness of Orkney was a real draw for our visit but I wanted to be within walking distance of civilisation in the place where we were actually sleeping. Sure, you can rent an old damp bungalow five miles from the nearest shop The Smiddy is a little old mill house that has been very well refurbished in a modern Scandinavian style, and it's in the middle of Kirkwall. As the capital of Orkney, Kirkwall is, however, TINY, so you won't have to worry about noise! I found the scale and pace of Orkney very captivating and got used to it very quickly. Everything we needed on the island could be reached by car within 30 minutes and it had been a life long dream of mine to see the ancient monuments there. Orkney is beautiful!
Supermarkets are five minutes drive away, and fags and mags shops are a two minute walk. I must say that the locals seemed baffled by our central England up-front friendliness ( it must be their deeply ingrained Presbyterianism ) but I reckon they are alright once they get to know you.
It only ended up that three of us went but a family of five would find this a good base for their Orkney visit. If you want a comfortable modern central location with its own parking then I'd recommend the Smiddy.
This lovely house was just perfect for our family trip to Orkney. The location was very central - we were in the centre/harbour area within a few minutes walk. Also all the sites we wanted to visit were within easy driving distance.
The house was beautifully renovated and had all the amenities we needed. The beds were very comfortable and there were plenty bathrooms (the main bathroom resembled a space ship with a sunken bath and multiple jets!)
Also appreciated the welcome pack of local cheese and crackers.
My only regret is that we only booked a short break. House had everything we needed especially comfy beds. Plenty to do in Kirkwall and house in great location for shops, bars and restaurants.
Hopefully will be back again in the future and for longer next time.
Fantastic place to stay. Spotless on arrival. Great location just walking distance to everything. Thanks so much
The Smiddy has everything you could wish for in a holiday let, well equipped and a great location for touring Orkney or going for a stroll around Kirkwall. Christine was always quick to respond to any query we had. All round an excellent place to stay and one of the best we've been to over many years of self catering holidays.
Beutiful big clean house. As you can see in pics well equipped with everything you need from jacuzzi fancy showers to nice big kitchen dining and jukebox in living room. Location perfect 2mins walk if that and you was on to shops and bars and cafes etc. Christine and Malcky were very helpful and accomdating to our needs.
We was up for Wedding at St Magnus Cathedral so had 6 of us staying in house for 3 nights as three couples so was really good as every couple had bedroom and one room was en suite but the other 2 bedrooms had bathroom next door so each couple had there on bathroom and space so perfect.
Price we found be superb if you manage find anything cheaper and better than Smiddy id be very surprised
