Description: Browns is a special restaurant which quite fittingly sits at the heart of the resort. Named after Max Brown, who became legendary at The Mere for his magnetic charm, endless enthusiasm and innate passion for exemplary service, his spirit is echoed in our passion for food and guest experience. A destination restaurant with a simple philosophy, "Nature to plate", the prime focus is on using only the freshest seasonal ingredients, simply prepared, without all the fuss but presented in a refined way where the flavours of the dish are instantly recognisable. Our commitment to using local suppliers is of paramount importance to us. At Browns the food does the talking.

Stayed overnight at the Mere so dined at Browns with my wife. Very attentive staff but they just didn't have the attention to detail/experience required of a restaurant billing itself as 'top end' for Cheshire. Examples include trying to rush us through for dinner even though we had only just started drinking our aperitifs (and the restaurant was well below full). Serving soup without giving us spoons..and then failing to clear away surplus cutlery and used glasses. The food itself was very good...we both had steaks (additional charges from table d'hote menu) and they were cooked exactly to order. Pricey wine menu so you need to do some looking around for the right price/value option. Good bartender for after dinner drink who properly warmed brandy glass before serving.

Driving to The Mere through a beautiful golf course is a pleasant experience and the setting of Browns, in a very attractive attrium is also impressive. Unfortunately the food and service do not meet the high standards expected of the setting. I told the restaurant when making the reservation and also on the actual day of our visit it was my wifes birthday and was told they would arrange somehitng special but they didn't.Neither the waiter or Maitre'D knew what a Lamb Chump Steak was even though it was on the menu. They say its al a Carte, but the menu is priced as 2 or 3 courses with supplements for many dishes. Food was presented well but its not fine dining. Its located in an affluent area of Knutsford and has a golf course and new hotel and Spa on site, so I dont think it will be troubled by a shortage of customers even if the food and service are not up to the price levels asked.
