“Very slow service”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

Stopped off for a coffee and cake after our walk around Tatton Park. The restaurant is a little out-dated and the service was very slow. Each member of staff handles each order so it took a lot longer than anticipated. It took 20 minutes to get PART of our order and another member of staff had to pick up the pieces. If we hadn't paid before hand, we would have left. The tables in the courtyard are lovely, especially on a sunny day, just a pity the service was slow.

“Whatever happened to logic & customer service?”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

I'm not one for writing reviews but felt that my experience today should be fed back to others to avoid disappointment..

On arrival I asked if they had scones (previous 2 times they hadn't) & on being told they had, we ordered afternoon tea for 2 at £9.95 each consisting of selection of dainty sandwiches, tea, scone with cream & jam then choice of cake.

Our "selection" of sandwiches wasn't a selection. We had to choose 1 of 4 sandwich fillings each. My choice of sandwich was not available so I had to reorder. They were full sandwiches, not dainty. I would have expected a "selection" to be just that!

As we finished our sandwiches, the young waiter came to tell us that they had ran out of scones. This was because they had not put scones aside for us, despite knowing we had ordered a cream tea. The ladies sat next to us were shocked that they had let this happen & were so matter of fact about it.

We were offered a toasted teacake instead but declined this. Who wants toasted tea cake after a sandwich? We pointed out that our scones should have been put aside at the start but this fell on deaf ears. We said we would just have the cake instead. Another older waitress then came to us to say that we could have the cake but they would have to charge us separately for tea, sandwich & cake which was more than the Afternoon Tea. We tried to get her to explain this theory to us (bearing mind it's their fault not ours that they had no scones) but she just went on to say that if we had a teacake instead then we could have cake & they wouldn't accept that we didn't want cake. Again the ladies sat next to us were as shocked as we were. They even gave us a leaflet they had picked up earlier, recommending Afternoon Tea at Fryers Garden Centre.

Having been told we couldn't have the cake as there were no scones, we decided to ask for the bill. A young waitress then came over & asked what we'd ordered as our order was not in the till. We told we'd ordered the full Afternoon Tea but had only had sandwiches & tea. We explained the above & she went to get the bill. A man then brought us the bill of £13.60 for sandwiches & tea. I told him that I was paying £10 as that was half the bill for 2 Afternoon Teas seeing as we had only had half an Afternoon Tea. He said that they had not said that we could not have the cake & had misunderstood that we would have to pay the individual prices. We hasn't! We left.

In the street we bumped into the ladies who were sat next to us. We told them what had happened & they agreed that we had been told we could not have the cake without the scones & if we did, would be charged the full price!

“Nothing too much trouble”
Reviewed March 12, 2013 via mobile

Popped into this quaint little coffee house for lunch recently even though there was an obvious staff shortage nothing was too much trouble for the foreign ( as the gentleman next to us referred to her ) waitress who even under difficult circumstances had a constant smile and a pleasant word for all the customers. We both ordered soup and a cake to follow which were both mouthwateringly delicious. Expect to see me again very soon

“If you happen to be in Knutsford....”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

The first time we found this coffee house tucked away was a few years ago when we were cycling in the area. Since then we have called each time we are in Knutsford. The coffee and scones are delicious. The decor is unusual with dozens of penny farthing bicycles hung from the high ceiling and a little model train running around the upper walls every so often. In the summer it is pleasant to sit at one of the tables in the cobbled courtyard. This was a chilly day so we sat inside. We had an amusing exchange with the two women at the table next to us as we took it in turns to get up and shut the door. Why is it that some people walk in or out of buildings leaving the door wide open behind them?
