Attended a dinner last Friday 4th October 2013, a Celebration, presentation of trophies, 353 people in attendance. An absolute shambles, not enough staff on duty, took over one hour to serve the soup and clear, trying to be too greedy and filling the venues with events without having enough staff on duty to ensure the event went off successfully. It got so late that the coffee was cancelled to allow speeches and presentations. Mere you let your clients down badly, food was good but lack of staff for serving food and drink was a disgrace - shame on you, be warned if booking a large function at Mere.

Dear Rob S,

Thank you for sharing your review with us, we take all our guest comments very seriously and we are grateful for your feedback.

We would like to take this opportunity to make you aware that at very short notice we had to accommodate a much larger group than originally planned, due to our client’s request.
This unfortunately had an effect on the speed of the service as a direct result.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience this caused on the evening and your comments have been passed on to our Senior Management team for their attention.

Once again, our sincere apologies on this occasion that we weren’t able to deliver the high standards we set.

Yours Sincerely

Lauren Yates

We stayed here on a Fizzy Friday deal, for my husbands birthday, as we were picking our son up from Manchester airport the next day.

The hotel is amazing from the minute you enter the gateway off the road, come down sweeping through the golf course to the hotel.

We arrived after a horrible long drive on the M6 which took twice as long as it should have, but were greeted by friendly front of house staff, and whilst we were talking about our day, the gentleman behind the desk was discreetly checking us in, so by the time the conversation had finished it was all done, how cool was that.

We were then shown personally to our room, we have stayed in a lot of expensive hotels and this has to be a first. We entered the room and open the patio doors onto a small patio with a large wow, only to find a wedding party outside having pictures on the perfect lawn -sorry!!

The view from our patio door was overlooking the lake and golf course, and has to be one of the best locations we have stayed in.

The room was huge and modern, with a large flat screen TV, tea making facilties and a nice cold bottle of prosecco and glasses in the fridge.

The bathroom was large and modern, with a shower over the bath, lots of lovely goodies for your hair etc.

My husband then used the driving range, before we went for a pre dinner drink in the Browns bar.

The restaurant is sort of intergral to the Reception which is all under a large "canopy" which is the courtyard to the old part of the house, and is amazing, especially in the evening when it is lit and the feeling is really modern and easy eating.....really cool, there was even a gentleman playing a piano discreetly in the restaurant, all adding to the ambience and making if a fabulous evening.

We had pre dinner drinks in Browns bar and we were served by one of the best members of staff ever, a true credit to the hotel. We had a fabulous meal, truly a bargain on the Fizzy Friday deal we then went to look at the spa as we had not had time to use it. The spa staff were extremely friendly and encouraged us to take a look at the pool etc. Needless to say we actually got up at 6.00am the next morning (pool opened at 6.30) so that we could use the facilities before leaving to pick you our son from the airport.

It was amazing, absolutely worth getting up extremely early for.

Breakfast was wonderful, fruits, yoghurts, plenty of fresh juices and a wonderful array of cooked goodies.

Upon leaving the hotel, we bought two MereKat's to remind us of the fab time we had had.

We have never left a hotel regretting that we were leaving, we could happily have stayed another few nights, especially as hubby would have loved to have played a round of golf on the immaculate course.

We have never been to a hotel, with such friendly staff from the Managers down to the Groundsmen on the golf course, to the Gardner and the Housekeeping staff, everybody smiled and spoke to you it was fabulous.

We have talked to our family so much about this hotel that we are all going back for a family break and I for one can't wait.

Thank you so much to all the staff, from the Management down, for the fabulous stay we had we will be back very soon xxxx

My partner and I stayed in the hotel as part of the sparkle Sunday which includes a two course meal (amazing), a bottle of prosecco and breakfast. Set in beautiful grounds, excellent customer service, very clean, large rooms and a top quality spa. I will definitely be staying here again.

I really didn't want to have to write a poor review for this hotel, but feel I have to. I Stayed at the mere last week, driving up from London for the night for some R&R. Upon check in, we were told that the spa has a dedicated children's time for 2 hours... Never mind, you think- surely there won't be many kids staying here as the basic room is 175 a night.... No, it seems every range rover driving mum within 10 miles turned up, making our relaxing afternoon by the pool comparatable to that of a local council leisure centre, with parents throwing balls around and kids screaming and shouting... Needless to say this was right in the middle of the afternoon, so we promptly left, feeling a bit bitter about not knowing that this would be the case... I'm still baffled after telling management why this was not mentioned on the website buy instead we were told on check in after passing over our credit card details.... Probably because people like me who are looking to escape this kind of experience would probably have gone elsewhere in the first place. The spa itself was great, facilities perfect- why ruin it for your guests by allowing these clubs at all??
The rooms are very nice in the hotel, but lets not get carried away as you are paying top prices for it, so this should be expected. They did need a good dust though- attention to details- I would suggest the head housekeeper sits on the loo and looks at the bathroom from a guests point of view- all the lower shelves, mirrors etc are covered in dust!

Breakfast was a joke. Dirty cutlery, lipstick on cups, food tepid and not replenished, service dreadful etc etc.. it was like a scene out of faulty towers. We were told to go back to our room to wait as it was too busy at one stage! People were eating off of their laps! It's a good job that a hotel ratings inspector wasn't there as management would have been very disappointed.

Upon leaving I did complain, and the guest relations manager was very polite and dealt with my complaint well. I followed this up with an email which she said was being passed onto management to consider... 1 week on, no contact from the manager, hence my review on TA. Sorry, I gave the hotel a chance to make things better but I guess my opinions and the fact I spent over 200 pounds on a night with you counts for nothing...
Overall a nice hotel but have stayed in a lot better places with more professional services. If you don't mind an expensive room where management clearly prioritise non residents then this will be right up your street!

The hotel is first class not over attentive but pre-emtive if you no what I mean.
A fizzy Friday booking gave us a great foundation for a lovely stay.
We have enjoyed the hospitality of numerous hotel chains but Mere is right up there, from the top notch room to the fantastic view spot on.
The real icing on the cake was to converse with a true British sporting legend, Absoloute honour.
Take the opportunity and utillise an Indian summer and enjoy real hospitality.

Firstly let me say I should have written this review 12 months ago but never got round to it!!!! We stayed at The Mere as part of a large group being entertained by Michelin. As they picked up the tab for the whole weekend I am unable to comment on the value side of things as I have no idea what it cost. However, rooms were lovely size, clean and well maintained. We had a lovely balcony - which was just as well cause phone reception was a little tricky ..... (Which when you are a party of business people is disappointing) but we got limited reception on the balcony!!!! The bar and public areas of the hotel were very nice , staff efficient and helpful. As my partner needed to make some phone calls on the first morning we stayed in the room and had a room service breakfast on the balcony - which was nice and arrived bang on the time ordered. The hotel organised a barbecue for our group on the first night which was excellent but apart from this we were attending functions off site for the rest of our stay so I can't comment of the restaurant dinner menu - however the breakfasts were very pleasant! The grounds are lovely, I am assured the golf course is also and the view down to the lake from the terrace makes this a very pleasant spot of a drink. All in all a positive experience and I hotel I would definitely recommend and would stop at again (indeed we did try to book only a few weeks ago but they were full!!!!!
