We have stayed at Cotton's on three separate occasions in the last month - a total of four nights with 2 adults and our 3 kids (9,7 & 5). We discovered this hotel the first time when we had to come up for a wedding in Altrincham and decided to use it again as a stopover both ways for a Scotland trip.

Knutsford is a pleasant little town although the hotel itself is set on a B road near to some prestige car dealerships and requires a drive to anything of note in the area. The hotel itself is a modern low rise brick building set on a a green slice of land. It looks quite swanky on drive by with the signage.

Check in on all three occasions was smooth and quick, though if you are booking through an intermediary booking site, it may be worth a call to confirm your requirements. We were given a lovely room on our first visit that had a separate bedroom, 2 TVs and had room for both a double sofa bed and separate rollaway. On our second visit we were given a much smaller room which wasn't really big enough for us. On our final visit we demanded the lovely room 217 of our first visit and the hotel obliged by swapping us out of the again allocated standard double with sofa bed. The corridors between rooms feel slightly dowdy and oppressive, though the other communal areas are much nicer.

The rooms are very nice - neutral decor that doesn't set the world on fire though our bigger room had a nice 4 poster bed and even a mirrored ceiling. Basically the standard is more than comparable to most premium hotels and everything is meticulously clean. What sets Cotton's apart is some of the small touches. Real filter coffee in disposable filter bags in the rooms. Excellent mint and green tea. Milk and water in the fridge. The kids even got their own robes and snacks. And the real winner is free WiFi! This is a major draw for a hotel chain. Do you know why most hotels charge for internet in rooms? It's because if they don't then they don't make any money from pornography consumption because people will browse it online instead of paying for it on the TV - seriously! So well done to Cotton's for trailblazing the way to free... er.... internet.

The health clubs facilities are excellent. We loved the pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. Very relaxing and set in a nice atrium space with very good changing facilities. And if you're into tennis then the courts look great too.

The breakfast is superb. A constantly refreshed hot buffet with good quality ingredients. The mushrooms are especially good. Don't forget you can ask for eggs any way you like, so ask for poached even if you don't see them. Fresh fruit is great and the cereal and juice selection is extensive. Service can be erratic though it does tend to get busy especially on the weekend and the table settings are extremely elaborate for staff to change out and turn over tables during peak times.

We ate one night in the bar one night. The bar menu is the same as the restaurant menu with the addition of an overly extensive tapas selection which I think just can't guarantee freshness. The prices even by London standards are pretty top whack so I'll judge the offerings harshly. We went for a tapas plate for one and it was presented quite beautifully on a square of grey slate. Sadly it just didn't taste fresh - limp sardines and bruschetta with tomatoes that were on the turn. The other main - vegetable kebab with halloumi cheese and chicken. I love halloumi but this was a gloupy, greasy heap set upon a pile of cous cous - not the light sounding promise of the menu. But the biggest crime in the restaurant is the kids menu. We paid £17.85 for three juices and three bowls of bog standard penne pasta literally dressed in condensed canned tomato soup. It can't have cost them more than £2 to put it on the table. If that doesn't take your kid's fancy you could opt for Heinz Baked beans on toast! I did see on departure that small portions of some meals are on offer which could be a better option. On balance the evening food shows a hotel stuck in the 90's - overly poncey, over priced and treating kids like second rate citizens.

All-in-all Cotton's is a lovely hotel and feels like a treat. Apart from the food it is also excellent value. The people are on the whole very caring and go out of their way to be helpful. I particularly like the older chaps on night duty who are real dears.

We appreciate the time that you have taken to provide this detailed review and thank you for all your great comments and I am delighted that the small details did in fact make a big difference to your stay and that you enjoyed the hotel’s facilities including the Spa and our breakfast offering.
With regard to the bar menu, we feel that we offer value-for-money on all our products/services but, unfortunately, it seems that on this occasion our standards were well below those which are normally offered.

Thank you also for your kind comments regarding the staff on night duty.

We look forward to seeing you at Cottons soon.

Kind regards

I arrived tired after a few days on the road for work and was pleased to check in very quickly and find myself allocated a spacious, comfortable room, Next on my list was a cup of tea and I found myself disproportionately pleased to discover proper mugs in my room and joy of joys, real milk in the fridge instead of that yucky long life stuff. Simple things that made a tremendous difference.

Refreshed it was time for a shower. I loved the powerful stream of hot water and was even more impressed to find a real hairdryer instead of the half hearted effort most hotel rooms offer. Returning to the hotel after dinner I enjoyed a comfortable night's sleep and appreciated the complimentary bottle of water provided. Free wifi was another welcome touch.

Breakfast was my only disappointment in that the range on offer seemed limited for a hotel of this quality.

All in all an impressive hotel with good attention to detail.

Just returned from an enjoyable two night weekend stay at the Cotton. We had a on suite room that could not be faulted and neither could the menu which we took in the dining room on the first night. The second night we ate in the bar and again the food was good.

I do feel a five star hotel should have a dress code in place though for both residents and day visitors when public rooms such as the bar and dining room are used.

In the first instance, thank you for your very kind and positive comments.

I am pleased that your children enjoyed the ‘little extras’ we provide so thank you for recognising that and that you particularly appreciated our Spa facilities and friendly staff – I will certainly pass on your comments to my chef.

We hope to see you and your family again at Cottons.

Kind regards

We stayed at the Cottons last week as my husband had a conference to attend there. I was so pleasantly surprised. The family room we had was spotless. A bit old and tired but really clean. The bath robes for the children with pockets filled with dried fruit was such a nice touch. As were the cookies and milk we got every night! The dinner at Magnolia was lovely. We had the kids with us and the staff went out of their way to make the kids comfortable. A special mention to the chef who made a special meal for the kids..fussy lot! Nice to stay in a hotel where the staff smile often and plenty. The swimming pool is nice and surrounding areas clean. All in all a very pleasant stay at the cottons. Would recommend for a short stay.
