“Overpriced......”
Reviewed January 3, 2008

We stayed here on New Year's Eve because the location was very close to where we were attending a function. It is really a pub with rooms, as opposed to a proper hotel. You enter straight into the bar and there is no reception, so someone comes out from behind the bar and searches through a big box for your key. The room was large, but very very cold, especially during the night, I was absolutely freezing. This is not helped by the fact that the beds do not have duvets, but only inadequate blankets. The bathroom is rather basic, with a grubby shower curtain. The cream carpet is in dire need of cleaning, and the fact that the tiny tv is placed on top of the wardrobe makes it uncomfortable to watch. Apart from this, the room is adequate, with nice blinds and curtains. We returned from our function at 1:30 to find a New Year's Eve party going on at full blast until 3:00, making sleep absolutely impossible, it was like having a disco in the same room it was so loud. Whilst I appreciate it was New Year's Eve, I do feel that we should have been warned about this when we booked, as 3:00am is quite late by anyone's standards. Apart from this, staff were friendly and helpful, and the continental breakfast (included) was fine - choice of cereals, one piece of toast and a warm croissant each. However, I do feel that £90 was expensive for what we got, I do not think we got value for money, especially as we only had a few hours sleep due to their party! I would not stay here again, I feel it is way overpriced for what it is.

Recently spent 2 nights here - we had the Louis room. The room was very large and nicely decorated - opulent and regal. The carpet though was very pale cream - some muddy footprints on it, which took away from the overall feel. The room itself otherwise was spotless.
The large 4 poster bed was very comfortable. The bathroom is small - but had a bath and very powerful over-bath shower. There was a small old-fashioned portable television in the room and tea/coffee making facilities.

We ate both nights in the restaurant but were not that impressed. Service was not great - the second night we waited almost 2 hours before we got our food - made worse by the fact our 4 year old was served about half an hour after we sat down. Thought the food was average - not that bad, but not that great. The poor service we got though meant I would not recommend eating here.

We had booked a fold up bed for our 4 year old when we made the reservation. They forgot, and when we enquired said they had "run out of extra beds" on our first night. Again we were unimpressed with
this - luckily they provided a bed on the second night.

The manager of the bar/restaurant/hotel is very friendly, chatty and helpful, however I thought the rest of the waitresses in the restaurant particularly were a bit surly.

Overall we had a reasonable stay - the room was very nice and the decor was good, however the poor restaurant service, average food and issue with the camp bed means we would not stay here again.

Decided to stay at The Hunting Lodge in summer 2006. Was surprised by the excellent standards and delicious food. The restaurant and bar decor is amazing and the themed rooms give that edge. The web site [-] says it all.
Thank you for a lovely stay
