“Warm welcome in December”
Reviewed December 19, 2012

We visited Warners at Giunton Hall for a weekend to celebrate my wifes birthday. Had a great weekend, with excellent entertainment, food, and service. We booked a superior suite chalet and were very impressed with the standard and roominess. The chalet was very well appointed inside and had excellent facilities, even 2 TV's. All of the sites facilities were of a good standard and well maintained. some building work is going on but this did not impact at all on our stay. The restaurant and food was very good, plenty of space and a menu to suit all tastes. The entertainment was as always superb, and well supported by the team who were very talented and hardworking. Don't be put off by the chalet - holiday camp set up. This site functions as a hotel and the short outdoor walk from chalet to function suite does not detract from the pleasure of the stay. Also if you stay you can also use the site at Corton.

Room Tip: Superior chalets are the best but are further away from the facilities. If any mobility issues ask f...

We have stayed at many Warner resorts. First thing to say is that they are not really places for adults without children, they are best characterised as places for retired people to holiday. Being 54 myself, im no spring chicken, but in general im 15 years younger than the average age at most Warners, including this one. Its somewhat ironic that the majority of the (good) entertainment staff are only about 4 years older than the age you need to be to be let into a Warners!

The 'resort' is tucked down the end of a poorly maintained residential road, with a tescos extra one side and a theme park on another, with the A12 running past it - a smallish road at that point.

If you like walking in the cold and rain (dec) you will love Gunton Hall. You will have around 150 yards to walk fron the car park to the very low key entrance door at the front of the main building. You are, once checked in, faced with the maze of ways around what would have been the (beyond all recogntion as a hall) 'hall' section of the resort. Somehow, from this point you find your way to the gift shop, restaurant, bar, cafe and entertainment area. I think the cafe area is best described as a bunch of tables in a wide walkway between wherever and the dance hall. £4.80 for a manky (worse beef than you get out of a packet) bagette.

Im a bit indestinct about whats where as the place is a bit of a jumble in the main building.

Ok, so now to the Chalets. From old 70s pictures in the pool complex you can see that this was an original warners resort, with outside pool, and - gasp - KIDS there!!!! The place retains the look and feel of a 1970s chalet resort, crossed perhaps with sheltered housing bungalows. You can get more of a 60s feel as you walked to our part of the chalets as you had to walk past at least four orange/brown painted chalets, made of wood, that I really hope are not acually used for guests. Perhaps they are staff accomondation, like the 30 year old static caravan that were stuck behind our block.

So, Now for the 200 yard walk to our chalet - this you have to do a lot if you want to use the main facilities. We were told by a nice lady guest that there was a bit of a shortcut. You could walk from a main door where all the coats are put by the wet and cold guests for their walk to the dining area, past a little corridor that goes past the back of some chalets (which are themselves right on the route to the restaurant - why would you need patio chairs to sit outside these and have people trip over your feet on the way to the main building) past the beer kegs, and past the back of the restaurant, past the front of some other peoples chalets/ patios, over a flooded path that i think is a bridge, but the water runs over, not under it. You can also get your bearings by seeing the one or two moss covered large brick sheds marked "maintenanace".

So, you let yourself in your bungalow - ours was a premium one,,,,,,, dont go for less!!!!!

Although not cold (although bathroom is freezing) its heated by storage heaters, which have created brown streaked heat marks up the orange / beige walls. There is also a 'flame effect' fire, with no flame effect, that stopped working, and when moved to see if there was any thing unplugged, when it did work again it smelt of burning dust, so we switched it off.

the first room is the sitting room. About 8 1/2 feet square, basically a hallway with an ANCIENT sofa, a small (about 19 inch) TV - really - surely everything is 32 plus now? with a small fireplace the best MFI could muster, with the non flame effect fire in it. Plus your two warm bottles of wine you get as the premium package - no fridge.

To the right is an archway with a approx 8 x 8 bedroom. OK furniture, OK bed, im told I can sleep on anything though, and a wardrobe, draws, dressing table. Iron and board provided, but come on - its a premum room - couldnt it have been a steam iron? You can buy a decent iron for about £50 at the tescos thats behind Gunton. As is a theme park. Seemed a little ironic to have a rollercoaster 200 yards away from an adults only park - bet there is no sound of sreaming at all from the starting drop in the summer.

Bathroom. Quite large, stony type floor, 100w tail rail to 'heat' the whole thing, so bloody cold, and a shower/bath sink and loo. Takes about 70 secs of full bore hot water tap to get any hot water at all.

Wallpaper at various points was peeling, some of the screws in the bathroom were rusty, and the walls above the heaters were burnt. I think the maids did all they could to polish a proverbial.

Im not a fire safety officer, but surely there shold be more than one way out than the front door? There are no windows or doors at the back, and no opening windows. The front door is right by the electric fire. So, if you have a fire at that point (perhaps you are drying your soaking clothes coming back from dinner?) then you have no escape.

Going to dinner, you hang your coat on the (too few) coat hooks. Service is prompt, and polite and helpful. Menu isnt all that in my view. You get a carvery, a couple veggie options and three other options. Stuff like pies, curry, tuna steak, tikka and poppadom, soup (the veg soup and mushroom soup looked same, but had different flavour), battered fish, whole trout. I had the carvery three days running - you can get quite fed up of that.

Breakfast is the usual cooked affair or cold offererings, cooked breakfast pretty much OK as far as cooked breakfasts are.

Swimming pool. Nice sized bool, but weird. At some point its been given a rubberised liner thats not properly fitted to the walls and floor. As you walk along you can feel pockets of water under the lining move. There is a whirlpool at one end that has no whirl action to speak of and is about 1 degree warmer than the pool. The sauner and steam room feel like sitting in a 8 x 6 garden shed, and are very intimate if as many as four are in the thing.

Changing rooms, or lack of. There are NINE lockers in the mens room, only two places to sit down and about room for four people.

Whilst we were there, a bunch of 40 somethings (or youngsters in the view of Warners) started throwing sponge rubber pucks around, which basically restricted us to one end of the pool. After 10+ mins the pool staff did tell them to moderate, but still stuff was being thrown about.

I got back to the changing room before the mass influx of TOWIES came in from their throwing excercises.

Warners are building new bungalows, - or lodges as they like to call them. Thats good and bad. Good as they are new, but bad in that they are ajoining existing chalets, and the workmen were breaking up and shifting concrete for the foundations at 10.30am on a Sunday morning. Nice if you were close by, we were a damp 300 yard walk from that point.

if you want to go to a Warners, go to Thoresby hall instead. Its balistically better. Or anywhere with the Take That impressionists - we have seen them 3 times and they are good,

We paid around £360 for this 3 day break. If you had paid the £650 asking price you would be livid. For £550 last year we spent a week in Gran Canaria as a package deal, inc fights and accomodation, and the chalets in Gran Canaria were MILES better.

Room Tip: Go to Thoresby instead, or at least go in the summer when Lowestoft doesnt look wet, cold, bleak and...

Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback.

Our target audience is for the over 55 market. Here at Warner we are all about lively atmosphere, an opportunity to dance with friends and simply to have a good time, without the kids! Reading through your comments I can see that your break was not up to our usual standards and therefore I apologise.

We have recently changed our entertainment and food menu to reflect guest feedback. We do try and shake up the entertainment schedule to keep some of the favourite acts and also try new something new for guests to enjoy.

25 brand new Garden Lodge Rooms will be available at Gunton Hall Coastal Village ready for occupation in Easter 2013. These Lodges are the height of luxury, completely eco-friendly and are perfect for those looking for a home away from home feel – light, airy and with modern colour ways and designs. I apologise that the development work for these disturbed your holiday break with us.

Your post is quite lengthy and therefore I would like to say I appreciate your comments and will try to rectify the problems mentioned.

Kind Regards,

Petrina Simmons, General Manager

We have just returned from a "Tinsel & Turkey" break at this resort.
The whole week was just great.
The entertainment was excellent. The best inclusive entertainment that we have in a package.
The room/chalet was very clean, heat that you can control yourself (with the temperatures outside below zero we found this to be ideal).
The food was excellent and very nicely presented.
The whole experience exceeded our expectations.

Room Tip: Choose a minimum of a Premier room

Gunton hall is one of the chalet resorts of Warners and should not be compared with the Warners hotels. The rooms whilst having reasonable facilities and decor are generally smaller than the hotel rooms and usually involve walking outside to get to the restaurant or entertainment. Gunton needs some TLC with leaking roofs in the main area and damp smell around the swimming pool area. Improvements are planned with some new chalets in 2013.
The food was very good quality and quantity, the entertainment is okay but is not at the same level we remember from when we used to go in the original Warner days prior to Bourne taking it over. The staff were friendly and tried very hard to ensure you had an enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Go for premier or above

Thank you for taking the time to write your review.

I thank you for all of your comments, we do take them all on board and I share them with all of the team here. It's great to hear that overall you had a lovely time with us. I can confirm that we did have for a short time some problems with our roof due to the harsh weather conditions but I am pleased to say these have now been resolved. The new rooms you mentioned are almost ready for occupancy!

They are are situated down by the lake that has been refurbished and re-landscaped. The area is now home to 25 beautiful garden lodges that are all en-suite and have their own patio areas. It something completley new for Warner and we are very excited to be having these at Gunton Hall.

We hope to welcome you back again soon and perhaps stay in a new suite.

Regards,

Petrina, General Manager

Just returned from Gunton Warners, entertainment 3 nights running, comedian and 2 great bands.
Food as always great, room spotless; it is hard to beat the whole package . This will be our seventh year and never been dissappointed. We have found that they are updating the entertainment and making inprovements on the site everytime we visit. Lowestoft is only 3 miles down the road and is a nice place to visit for a few hours and has a great selection of shops. The price is now a bit expensive but if you wait you can pick up an offer and save on the price in the brochere. The best thing of course is the site is children free and everyone can relax.
