“A pleasurable place of calm”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

This small local museum, in a side street off the High Street, offers well-presented exhibitions of mostly local artists often with a coastal theme. Children enjoy getting involved in various 'actions' such as a game of fishing. The shop in the foyer has a varied choice of New Forest related items for sale. The staff are very pleasant and helpful and the building has an air of peace and tranquillity. Try not to miss it.

“Good for kids”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Small museum which has put a lot of thought into hands on experiences for younger children with pull out 'touch and feel' drawers, fishing game and sit on boat in 'sea' area, weighing in the Victorian kitchen area etc. Good all round museum as something for everyone. Lovely staff who made us feel very welcome.

“A very interesting local museum”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

My wife and myself were visiting Lymington for the first time when we found this lovely little museum and art gallery down a street (New Street) off of the High Street, It is not huge but has an intimate feel about it. The museum itself provides an account of the local history of Lymington and the surrounding New Forest from Roman times to the present. It also provides a wonderful insight into the people , their work and how wars and other events affected the area and people. There is lots of interest for children with interactive displays , clothes to try on and artifacts to handle. When we visited the art gallery it featured a display of paintings and drawings by Randolph Schwabe who at one point was an Official War Artist. The staff were very helpful in responding to questions regarding the art gallery and museum and their enthusiasm for what they do is very clear. As pensioners we paid the concessionary entrance fee of £3 each which we regarded as extremely good value. Normal admission is £4 and £2 for a child plus special family ticket prices. Note that the museum is not open on a Sunday. The museum and art gallery have a very busy programme of ongoing activities and exhibitions and it is worth checking the website www.stbarbe-museum.org.uk to see what is going on.

Great for a "small town" museum with fantastic art exhibitions, historical re-enactments and very enthusiastic followers. Friendly and accommodating people support group.
