Description: Despite dating back at least 300 years, many of the original features of The Kings Head can still be seen today. When you visit The Kings Head you will see the long-lasting beams made from Napoleonic Ships that only add to the character of this old English pub.The pretty courtyard that we see today was previously used for fish-drying, whilst the buildings adjacent to the yard were an abattoir and fishermans house.Despite these drastic changes over time, the inside of the pub has remained somewhat the same and the great open fire that cannot be missed. It is these characteristics that, when you visit, make it easy to imagine the pub back in the 18th Century as a regular haunt for the smugglers and sailors that would frequent this famous sailing town.

Have now visited this pubs twice and not been disappointed with the lunch menu at £9ish for 2 courses. Dishes are generously sized, promptly served by attentive staff. The chili tasted delicious and was topped with fresh herbs. The old fashioned meatballs (f-g--ts only spelling this site seems to allow) were sublime, and the sticky toffee puddings is worth visiting for alone! Lovely place to hole up on a bleak winters day in snug and unspoilt pub with a blazing fire, comfy seating and where one feels one can while away the time and not out stay ones welcome. Whilst busy, it did not feel cramped or noisy and has a lovely olde world feel - good find.

My aim, as ever, is to provide a factual review - please click if you found it useful.

Visited on a weekday evening and it was fairly busy. Lovely big old tables. Menu was varied and we had: steak and ale pie and burger. Their 'Jenga' chips should be renamed 'Giant Jenga' and were amazing. Pie: good tender pieces of beef and it was a generous slice of a proper pie. Did find a few mushrooms in it too. Good selection of steamed veg. Burger: obviously home made and generous size but would benefit from more seasoning.

Wine glasses were of a generous (this word cropping up alot on this review!) size.

Total bill with tip for 2 mains and 3 alcoholic drinks was under £35 which was very reasonable.

Service: great.

Atmosphere: well this has got to be covered. Softly lit which was lovely, but as food arrived, it had got considerably darker outside and we were really struggling to see what we were eating. People at a nearby table were reading the menu with a torch! Sounds crazy but true. Maybe the lights could be tweaked up a little bit until the end of service?

To sum up: good varied menu with generous portions which won't break the bank. May not be older people's cup of tea in the evening due to the lighting situation.

Would definitely go again and recommend to friends.

We visited this pub on the strength of the TripAdvisor reviews and were not disappointed!

The kids portions would have done us; adult meals were enormous! Excellent staff and very nice selection of ales at the bar.
