Description: The Lord Nelson is a beautiful pub tucked away in the heart of Oakham. As just one of two towns in Rutland, Oakham itself is packed with character. The Lord Nelson fits in perfectly – dating back to the 1500’s the building has been lovingly restored the KNEAD Pubs way. With charming dining areas throughout the building, you’ll be able to find a cosy spot next to the Aga or enjoy a breath of fresh air in the secluded pub garden. The Lord Nelson is bursting with character, but its relaxed atmosphere makes it the perfect spot for a bite to eat and a chilled out pint. A centrepiece of the Lord Nelson is the delicious food, fantastic selection of ales and range of wines and other beverages. Here at the Lord Nelson we’re passionate about serving up the perfect pint, along with a mouthwatering meal that combines traditional pub grub with a modern twist. Our well-known, stonebaked (and scrumptious) KNEAD pizzas are always on the menu, plus a great range of lunch or dinnertime dishes. That’s what makes this pub in Oakham the ideal spot for dinner with family, a bit to eat over a meeting or simply a quick drink with friends.

We were taken to The Lord Nelson by friends who live nearby, and who used it regularly. The quirky layout has been extremely well planned, and each room has its own character. The food was great, plenty of choice from full meals to snacks - and some variety for vegetarians (unusual, and very welcome). Reasonable prices and attentive service all add to the charm - a return visit beckons!

Great fun . Never been to Oakham and chanced on this hidden gem . Atmosphere brilliant with helpful staff . Wasabi chicken full of flavour . Felt like a real local pub with above average food . Not mass produced stuff . Thank you .

The Nelson is billed as Oakhams newest pub and we thought it was lovely. Set in the market square, its actually a really old historic building with lots of little rooms, nooks and crannies perfect for a quiet drink or meal. The main bar had an excellent selection of ales and a particularly good Raspberry beer. They have two regular ales and three ever changing. Sadly we were too late to eat arriving after 9 p.m., however the menu looked good, offering bistro favourites and pizza's. We enjoyed some very good bar snacks, of peppers stuffed with cream cheese and some good marinated olives. There was a nice mix of clientele, all enjoying their evening and the staff were very welcoming and able to offer some historical facts on the building when asked. I note from their website that they do not particularly take bookings, but the place is deceptively large for this to not be a problem. Can't wait to return.

The good bits first. The premises are a rabbit warren of rooms upstairs and downstairs, which makes it a bit quirky and quaint. The food is good, when you get it, there are 3 real ales on the bar, but all of a similar style.Prices are reasonable.

Unfortunately, the place is severely let down by the attitude of the staff and the poor service. Having tried three times to book a table for a group in the evning, we arrived to find no record of the booking. The staff showed a very indifferent attitude and made no attempt to explain nor accomodate us. Obviously we went elsewhere in town where the greeting and the service could not have been more different. On previous occasions when we have managed to eat here, service is very slow - OK it's always busy (don't honestly know why), but few places are this bad. Also, there is only one tiny bar and trying to get a drink in the evning is a battle. Suffice to say that we shall never go back, one bad experience we can forgive, repeated failures and they are off my list!
