“Well looked after in a hotel with character”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2013

If you're after a minimalistic modern hotel with no character this is not the place for you.
Upon arrival at this centrally located old coaching inn there was a problem with our reservation, but the manager arranged for complimentary coffees in the bar whilst it was sorted out. It was quickly sorted and the manager brought us the key to our room. The receptionist Jodie showed us to our room (Quorn) and we were delighted that we had unexpectedly been given a four poster room. Although a little cold on arrival, the heating kicked in and the room warmed. We enjoyed a good dinner in the hotel and a good breakfast. Shower worked well. Bed was very comfortable.
Staff were great and interested in their customers treating them like friends, as well as providing a great service.
It is an old coaching inn and is furnished in that style. A lick of paint will soon be needed in certain areas.
Would stay again.

Room Tip: Quorn Room was next to the road, so if you are a light sleeper you may hear the traffic noise toward...

Booked as a Brook hotels valentines offer. Our room was adequate but tired and small. Marks on the carpet and some cobwebs. Our 'candlelit dinner with coffee' was actually just a table in the small restaurant...and I was charged £5 for the coffee!!! That said the staff and manager were all very pleasant. But I won't be returning.

In an excellent location this warm and welcoming hotel with its friendly and helpful staff was a great find.

From the moment we arrived until we departed, nothing was too much trouble. Our room was a little tired looking and had an en suite with a bath when we would have preferred a shower but it was clean and comfortable and we had no problem sleeping.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would most definitely stay here again.

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us. I am delighted to hear that you loved both the character of the building and its central position in Oakham .It is in a perfect location for exporing Rutland and Rutland Waters. It is always a real boost to all the staff to know that their efforts to make you feel at home and welcome are appreciated and I will be sure to pass your kind comments directly to them .
I am aware that in parts the Hotel is looking a little worn but we are currently addressing this with a programme of repainting and decorating which I know you will appreciate on your return .
Thank you once again for choosing to stay at The Brook Whipper-In and I look forward to seeing you back with us very soon .

We visited the Whipper-in whilst we were holidaying in the area. Firstly for coffee but then decided to return later that evening for dinner. We were both made to feel very welcome by our waitress for the evening, namely Chelsea. From the minute we were take to our table from the minute we left she looked after us exceptionally well. The food was of a good standard, reasonably sized portions and well presented. Next time we are in the area we will make sure we visit the Whipper-In again.

We booked this room as part of an offer from Brook Hotels having stayed with them in their much more modern hotel in Leeds.
We were warmly welcomed by the receptionist and quickly given our keys to a rather tired room overlooking the part refurbished inner courtyard. Fortunately the builders were not working on the outside rendering whilst we were in the room.
The evening meal was average - a bit above pub grub but not by much. The breakfast was superb and one of the best in comparison to any other hotel we have stayed in.

We booked this hotel as it was handy for Rutland Water as my daughter and I were sailing in The Tiger Trophy, so essentially we were after somewhere to lay our heads for a good nights sleep rather than something with all the bells and whistles!

If we'd been exploring the area the hotel is well placed both within Oakham and Rutland. I was a little worried about the safety of my car when I saw the car park (the lighting issue mentioned in other reviews hasn't been resolved yet and the car park is down the road from the back of the hotel) however but this proved unfounded.

It's a quant country hotel with a cosy bar, restaurant and seating areas and the mandatory stuffed animals adorned around the place. As there were no family rooms available we asked for 2 doubles as close together as possible. This is exactly what we got - 2 rooms directly opposite each other.

The rooms were a good size, clean and tidy, however our room in particular (each room has a name rather than a number and think ours was called the Haythrop) was very tired and needed a good decorate, particularly in the bathroom where there was paint peeling from the ceiling and broken window sash's. our daughters room was better presented however a mixer tap in the bathroom (which didn't work) rather than a shower which meant it was a bath or nothing. Our daughters could use our shower but if you had this room on its own that could prove a problem if you didn't like baths! The one big downside to our room however was the noise. It's directly above reception and you can hear every word being spoken downstairs (even at 6.30am!) as though they are actually in the room with you!

We didn't eat in the dining room so can't comment on evening meals however the breakfast (served in the cafe which forms part of the hotel) was excellent. Friendly efficient waiting staff, plenty of options and a well cooked country breakfast.

I have to say the staff overall from check-in, service and check out we're all very good and should be commended.

Overall a nice country hotel in a great location. I think for the current standard it's overpriced ( it's in the right price range for what its trying to be but needs to freshen up and offer more complete facilities to be on a par with other hotels in the region) and with a little more effort could be a little gem.

Thank you for your recent review . The Whipper In has a new manager in place and this “spring clean and tidy “ has been done ! You are right the Hotel is in an excellent location for exploring Rutland and since we have also started a rolling programme of redecoration, I am sure you will appreciate these changes on your next visit . I am happy to hear that all the team, reception and restaurant made you and your daughter feel welcome and comfortable during your visit and I will pass your appreciation of our hearty breakfast on to Chef .
