Owner description: The splendid Great Hall of Oakham Castle is one of the finest Norman Halls in England. The Hall is best known for its collection of enormous commemorative Horseshoes donated by members of the Royal Family and Peers of the Realm. It is also decorated with a range of 12th century sculptures. The grounds of the Castle are a peaceful oasis in the centre of Oakham. Following extensive refurbishments, the Castle now features improved facilities and activities for families.

“Over Eight Hundred Years of History”

This is an interesting attraction in the pleasant Rutland town of Oakham for several reasons, but the fact it is still standing after over 800 years is the most notable one. It's very convenient for the Town Centre, with an entrance just to the right of the main post office. The Great Hall stands in enclosed grounds, and inside you will find the ceremonial horse shoes presented by monarchs through the ages.

I was given a laminated document that gave the background, and then any questions I had were answered by a very helpful host.

“Possibly the smallest castle outside of Legoville”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

Oakham castle is definitely worth a stop if you're in Oakham, although it looks much more like a Viking longhouse than a castle. Interesting carvings, and when we visited there was an attendant to answer questions.

“Worth a Wander”
Reviewed April 6, 2013 via mobile

Oakham has a good Heritage Trail you pick up the leaflet from the Castle, as we did, and start from there.
The fortified Manor House is well maintained and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Although when you first read the boast, "we hold the biggest horseshoe collection in the UK" a singer may escape it really is worth seeing and they are not normal horseshoes, you will also learn why the county emblem of Rutland is a horseshoe, it's QI!
Follow the rest of the heritage trail from there it's about an hour to hour 'n halls walking on made up paths and it it signed. Makes for a pleasant afternoon.

Well worth a trip to this small "castle" so well preserved after hundreds of years use. Only two minutes walk from the market square in pretty Oakham village and better still its free entry! .

We walked by the entrance several times before we noticed it. This is a nice old castle built about 1190 A.D. As the pictures show, the interior is decorated with horseshoes from any royalty that visit.
