This B&B is in an amazing location with wonderfully, imaginatively decorated large rooms. The owner cooks a huge full English breakfast to your specs and is very friendly and helpful. The problem is that the housekeeping is, at best, lackadaisical.
They have a large outdoor hot tub but charge an additional fee to use it. They also charge for wood for the fireplace but we thought this was reasonable since they are using ecologs and have to buy them. There are cookies and wine left in the room that you can choose to buy. Unfortunately the cookies were 6 weeks past the best before date. They need to pay more attention and get some help with the housecleaning.

well, what can i say about The Hill House?

we arrived at HIll House as guests to my sisters wedding, and loved our time there. this place is perfect for families, there is plenty of space for children to explore and a cinema room. for those parents reading this i have a special comment for you, non-parent wont understand this, but all the time during our stay, our 3 children (7,8 and 11) didn't once utter "those" words, not once did we hear "i'm bored" this is a rare thing indeed. the kids also enjoyed seeing the cats, pigs and chickens. but in contrast we would also like to visit again child-free too

as an amateur photographer, Hill House is very inspiring, and i could see myself spending a long time indulging my hobby here.

next is the food, Hill House seem to cater for anyone, from meat eaters to veggies, my wife is veggy and dairy-free so very close to being vegan, again this was not a problem. if you are dieting i would take a few days off during your stay, as the portion are nothing short of epic! also everything is locally sourced and you can taste it.

drinks, i loved the bar, its like the long forgotten old style pubs, you know the type, open fire, piano in the corner etc. i honestly couldn't fault it, mummy and daddy sat with a glass or two of wine, while the kids played, watched films, explored, wonderful!

while writting this i am trying to think of some negatives to balance things out, but if im honest i am struggling to think of any. i suppose if your a non-drinker with allergies to animals that craves the whole minimalist clinical soul-less attire of a modern build hotel, that enjoys the solitude, with no social integration of fellow humans, oh and that also has some form of phobia towards large plates of food then maybe Hill House isnt for you.

just to finish off, you know when sometimes a host will say to you, "if you need want anything, then just ask"? and often (maybe its a british thing) you feel awkward in asking? well at Hill House you feel so relax and comfortable and its host's, that you really do believe that you could ask, and that nothing is a problem

Room Tip: the north suite is very good for a family, myself, my wife and 3 kids stayed in this suite, it has 2...

We had the wonderful opportunity of staying at here as my sister in law was getting married in Ross on Wye and she had booked out The Hill House for us all to stay in.
It was amazing! Our 3 children were totally occupied with exploring, talking to the chickens, stroking the cats and talking to the pigs as well as making extensive use of the cinema room!
Duncan and Alex couldn't be more friendly and lovely making all of us feel so welcome in their home.
The evening spent in the bar and then snuggling in the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in watching the fire rounded off a perfect day.
The food is really great and there was more than enough for all of us and the legendary breakfast did indeed live up to the reputation it has acquired! With our family group we have a vegetarian child and a dairy allergic veggie, not a problem for Duncan and Alex even though it's always really hard to go anywhere else where we can all eat food we actually like and want rather than it being the only option...
We were fortunate enough to have The North Suite and Wow what a room! There is so much space and the upstairs area for the children is so heavenly so you can be with them, but have some separation too! The balcony area has the most wonderful views and even though it rained in the evening of our stay we made use of it!

If you are wanting a corporate, characterless stay with dull hosts who have little to no interaction with you then The Hill House is NOT the place for you. If you like places where you are welcomed almost as part of the family and enjoy a chat and a laugh with amazing views, wonderful food and the most relaxing atmosphere I have ever experienced then you should check out The Hill House! We can't wait to be going back - not even our children wanted to leave.

Room Tip: The North Suite has a wonderfully large bathroom with a really powerful drencher shower, a super com...

Well arrived at Hill House and was impressed by Duncan and his wife Alex. He bounded out (only word for it!) to greet us. Said he had had a cancellation and we had a choice of rooms. Dryads Suite or North Suite, actually liked Dryads Suite best but being smokers and North Suite having a balcony, seemed practical. Duncan showed us around and it just had such a nice atmosphere, cosy, homely, lovely grounds. It was all very "help yourself to whatever you want", "put some music on if you feel like it". Chickens wandering around, cat's waiting at the door. Just thought how lovely it would be to book the whole place up with friends and have huge dinner, trust me, I'm not lying, and then perhaps sit in the bar or pick out a film and watch it in the cinema room or everyone going for a walk and being able to go in the sauna at the end of it.

It was cold and blustery when we arrived so it was nice to find bath robes, I hadn't packed in a practical sense even though my bag was really heavy so was relieved as thought I would be cold all weekend, that and wood burning stove. Got some huge cushions and a film that we had picked out (rooms have DVD players), roaring fire, bottle of wine, bliss!

Food was really good, lots of it, will be on a diet for weeks now. On the second night thought we would go out and The Hill Hiouse have a deal with a local gastro pub where you get a 10% discount on your meal (including drinks).

Did have a silly trip up but Alex and Duncan were very concerned and nice about it.

Comparing it to other B&Bs and hotels - it's not one of those awful places where you end up looking at the Landlady's photos, hosts are interesting and fun but it's not some corporate place either where you are smiled at in an insincere and cold way. So yes would recommend it :0)

Have just returned from our fourth trip to the Hill House and it remains as magical as ever. The welcome is genuinely warm here, Duncan and Alex are brilliant hosts along with their friendly cats, chickens and charming, polite kids. The bedrooms are all special but my particular favourite is the North Suite – an airy room with an spectacularly comfortable four poster bed on a platform, a balcony with a lovely view, and a claw foot bath practically big enough to swim in, all spotlessly clean and comfortably luxurious, with thoughtful little touches like ‘emergency wine’ and handmade biscuits. The rest of the house is made for relaxing and de-stressing, whether it’s lying on a sofa in the bar reading one of the many books about the place, de-stressing in the hot tub or just generally lounging about, Duncan and Alex go out of their way to make you feel completely at home. Duncan is a talented and generous cook, and the food is spectacular. On our first night we were served a feast of nettle soup and garlic bread, 2 delicious meat dishes, huge spears of locally grown asparagus, local handmade ice cream (the salted caramel flavour is to die for) and a robust cheese board accompanied by ‘Druid Fluid’ a potent, port-like elder-and blackberry wine. Everything that can be is local and/or organic and you can really taste the difference. This ethos carries through to the bar as well with a great selection of local ales and wines, along with some fabulous marmalade vodka. The Hill House remains hands-down my favourite hotel anywhere ever, and for a rest and recharge of the batteries there is nowhere like it. We generally go with a gang of friends and take over the place for a weekend which I think is the best way of enjoying all this special haven has to offer. We will definitely be back again. (and again)

......if you are go stay in a plastic hotel, with plastic food and corporate decor. If you are not you will absolutly LOVE The Hill House!

The rooms are amazing, comfortable quirky & original, with fantastic views over the Wye valley. The warm welcome from Duncan and Alex is entirely genuine, staying here is like visiting old friends, immediatly both friendly and stress free. Superb organic food, if not home grown/reared is all locally sourced, and prepared with loads of TLC (Others have waxed lyrical re food and drinks below, all entirely true)

I can't wait to return.......
