“Lovely old hotel”
Reviewed August 6, 2012

We stayed for 2 nights. I was a bit worried that the windy stairs might be too much for my 89 year old father (though he is pretty mobile), but thankfully he was fine. What also pleased him was a nice place to sit outside under cover to smoke his pipe!
We ate here both nights and all had delicious meals, the restaurant was very busy on the Saturday night, we were glad we had made a reservation. The staff were all friendly and helpful. There are two places to have a drink, the quiet 'library' style room, very comfortable, or the more lively bar. Good real ales and good wines so we were all happy.
The rooms are done up to a high standard and we all slept well.
We will definitely be back again!

We stayed here on a Friday night in July as two couples.
It is a classic small very old old town-centre hotel like you used to always find in any medium-sized English town. This one retains all of its old features and charm and has the warmth and personal touch of a family-run establishment.
Our room was spacious and both it and the bathroom had been newly re-appointed and so had all the latest kit. However, the bedrrom still retained the original beamed ceiling and the original sash windows and the uneven floor!
Downstairs there is a quiet lounge which is fitted out to look like a library, and a cosy bar bustling with friendly locals.
The restaurant was a joy. The service was prompt and friendly. The menu was not very ambitious, but all our courses were cooked perfectly and well presented. I must say that they do serve a particularly fine cheeseboard!
The food was very reasonably priced and the wines represented exceptionally good value.

Finally, if travelling here by car allow yourself an extra 20 mins to get lost in the tortuous one-way system!

Stayed for two nights with our two year old daughter. Our room was spacious, recently refurbished with a very comfortable bed. Breakfast was included and offered a cooked option as well as a buffet.

Eating in the restaurant during the evening was a pleasure. Food was high quality and good value.

Service all round was excellent. Friendly and efficient staff.

The hotel was well-placed to explore the rest of the area.

stayed at this hotel for the weekend (fri-sat) leaving sunday, the Hotel is full of character, if you like creaking floor boards then this is the hotel for you, my wife and i stayed in room No 3 on the first floor, a well maintained room with the added bonus of a 4 poster bed in it, the bed was very comfortable, but more importantly it looked like it belonged there, some hotels with 4 poster beds are very modern with a modern 4 poster and it just doesn't go, but this did, the bathroom is very modern, it has a very large walk in shower (no bath) and a modern round stone bowl sink, the only problem with this was my wife is only small, and found it difficult to have a wash in it, if you are tall then no problem, but in the end she found it easier to just get in the shower to have a wash, but apart from that minor glitch the room was great, there were free complimentries and also plenty of toiletries for either the sink or shower

we opted for the Breakfast Booking for our 2 night stay, and though the breakfast was good i did find that the Bacon was a bit hard, as if it had been warming to long before serving, though it may have been because it was fried for to long, either way it was a bit tough, but apart from that it was good

back to the creaking floors....our first night was disturbed a few times by the creaking floor boards, i myself was woken up a few times in the night by the noise of the floors caused by other guests (or ghost's) moving around in the early hours of the morning (4:00am) it was a bit annoying as i had had a long drive to get there and was looking forward to a good nights sleep, but i must admit on the second night i didnt hear a thing, it may have been because i was still tired plus i had had a glass or 3 of a rather nice Merlot

The Hotel is situated on a busy (but small road) which runs through the town, everything in Ross on Wye is within easy walking distance, HOWEVER.....the town is rather hilly in parts so if you are not too good on your feet, this could be a problem, especially walking from the Hotel down to the River and back, there are a number of eateries in the town, (chip shops, burger bars, small cafes etc, but it lacks a decent choice of restaurants, but The Kings Head comes to the rescue as their restaurant is quite popular, so it is advisable to book in advance if you wish to have an evening meal

for once the weather was in our favor and we were un-intentionally sunburned in one of the many pub beer gardens....lucky us LOL

all in all we had a great weekend and have no hesitation in recommending the KINGS HEAD HOTEL for your Olde Worlde stay in Ross on wye

Room Tip: Take some oil for the creaky floorboards, and something to stand on if you get room 3 with its tall...

This is a lovely Hotel with great character, the staff were very friendly. Our room was excellent, with everything that we needed. The food was also excellent apart from one well done steak when rare was asked for! We will definitley stay there again but next time we would book a room at the rear of the Hotel as there is a lot of activity in the street outside from people going home late, then deliveries from 4.15am and the road sweeper at 5.00!

Room Tip: Avoid rooms at the front of the Hotel.

We treated ourselves to a trip away from London to visit Ross and chose the Kings Head. Really lovely. Family owned, and were really helpful in pointing us in the right direction to explore Ross. Lovely room, tastefully decorated, and the right price. What we really liked was the lounge downstairs which is designed like a study. We felt really comfortable having a good hearty meal - nothing fancy, just good and nice, reading the paper, and browsing the book cases. Hotel has parking, is right on the high street (no noise). Really want to say well done to the family. Thank you.

Room Tip: Not sure if any rooms have a bath. But you need to ask if you prefer baths to showers.

Just spent a great few day at the Kings Head Hotel - Ross-On-Wye. The staff were very friendly and helpful, room excellent (very posh!) and food amazing. Stayed there 15 years ago and although there has been an update the charm remains the same. Won't be waiting another 15 years before we stay there again.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 6 which was huge with an excellent bathroom/shower and a really old stone fireplac...
