We stopped for just one night at Orles Barn to turn a trip to return a fire surround (of all things) to a local business into something slightly more pleasurable. Not knowing the area at all, we stumbled across this hotel on the internet. It sounded just what we were looking for, at a very reasonable price, and we were not disappointed!
On our arrival, to our delight, we were greeted by the welcoming committee of Twiglet and William (very friendly dogs) accompanied by their owner and proprietor, Richard. After a long journey, it was great to be led almost immediately to the very cosy lounge and offered a cup of tea and a relaxing sit down. Although the A40 is not that far away, once inside, there is not a sound from the outside world.
The bedroom was clean, warm and bright and the bed excellent. As this is an old (and in parts ancient) building, there are low beams to navigate in parts and I managed to bump my head within minutes of being told to watch out(!) - but that's all part of the charm of the place. The bathroom suite obviously dates from the 1970s, but everything works and there was plenty of hot water. We believe that in any case the bathrooms are due for an imminent refit.
The dinner was excellent and they pride themselves on local sourcing of produce, which is evident from the menu. Breakfast was very good too, with the sausage (not always a favourite) being particularly delicious.
Throughout our short stay, nothing seemed too much trouble and we were made to feel very welcome and at home by Richard, Kelly and their staff (dogs included!).
