“Lovely location, okay room, awful food”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2014

Lovely riverside setting. Greeted by friendly staff. Shown to room which initially looked fine. Old and cottage-like. En-suite door was an interesting shape. Reasonably clean but definitely needs redecorating.

Went to bar for a pint. Beer was nice. Ordered food. I had a burger that I think had been deep fried. It was disgusting and greasy. My partner had a chilli with rice and chips. Dining room was a bit grubby.

Went to bed. My partner kept rolling into me due to the whole room sloping towards the window so woke feeling a bit stiff. Single glazing meant the room was cold and there was a lot of condensation on the windows in the morning (probably why the ornament on the window has mould spots on it).

Some window panes were cracked and also some of the bathroom floor tiles. Noticed an unpleasant stain on the carpet that didn't look like any real effort had been put into the cleaning of it.

Has potential to be lovely but I wont be staying here again.

This is a restaurant review only.

I visited the Hope and Anchor after a day of paddling on the River Wye.

We moored up at the conveniently located jetty and made our way up to the lively pub.

The pub was very busy with people enjoying the summer weather and we found a table outside and ordered some food and some drinks.

Whilst the food is standard simple pub grub it was good value and arrived promptly. The service was efficient and friendly too.

I would certainly visit again if paddling on the Wye, it's ideally located for a few beers and a simple hearty meal.

Welcoming pub by the river on the outskirts of lovely Ross-on-Wye. Big garden complete with a wooden structure for smokers and lawns down to the river. Inside its a mish mash of public rooms some up stairs as are the loos
Food offered varies from the filled baguettes to more substantial meals. The tuna baguette that I chose was fine plenty of filling and some crisps on the side. We returned later in the day for an evening meal and my steak was cooked to perfection, unfortunately my friends request for the steak pie was met with a smirk and a message of 'we've run out' - a message repeated when she asked for a hot chocolate after dinner.
For a pub with such a location it surely could be so more welcoming with a bit of attention to detail and customer service

Called in after a day of canoeing. Food was good and service prompt. Staff were welcoming and friendly. The pub is in a great location with lots of external seating and views over the river. 5 of us ate here and the food was pretty good and prices reasonable. 3 ales on tap plus a Bank's beer and the usual stuff. We will definitely call again.

Room Tip: Sadly the best spot to sit out is in the wooden structure intended for smokers. Lots of tables in he...

We stopped off at the Hope and Anchor this weekend on the way back from the food fair in Abergavenny. The pub has a lovely location right by the river, with loads of inviting benches to eat outside.

We had a drink each, and ordered a BBQ chicken baguette and a ploughman's lunch from the menu which is full of the usual pub grub favourites, and has plenty of choice.

The food came pretty quickly and was good considering the very reasonable prices. The chicken baguette was excellent and came with a generous portion of chips. The ploughman's lunch was nice, although it could have done with some tastier cheese and better salad, but again you get what you pay for, and it was a perfectly reasonable plate of food.

Overall we really enjoyed our first visit to the Hope and Anchor. A lovely location to sit out by the river and relax, and good pub food at excellent prices. My only minor quibble would be that the service wasn't overly friendly.

Recommended, and we would definitely visit again if we were in the area.

A bunch of us moored up having canoed down the River Wye and stopped for a pint and a bite to eat in the beer garden.

They were clearly very busy and, despite a bit of a wait coped pretty well. For the prices paid the food is perfectly acceptable and the venue serviced our needs as required.

Great that we could stop off in the canoes without any bother, fuel up and move on!

This was our first visit to Ross and we selected this pub as it was by the side of the river.
We were so disappointed!
We ordered two cheese and pickle baguettes. It took 40 minutes for them to arrive and must have take all of 4 minutes to prepare. There were soft bread not crusty, the pickle was Branson type and there was lots of it. The cheese was the pre grated type and the salad had been tipped out of a bag there was no dressing on it. Crisps were served with it.
What an opportunity missed to serve some really tasty food that people might come back for.
We will not return here.
