“Lovely weekend”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2014

This is a great hotel mixing traditional with contemporary. We have eaten and stayed at this hotel over many years and always pleased with service and food. A recent weekend was spent on a special deal and it was very busy. Although the restaurant was full, the service was excellent and the food very high quality. We were in a superior room overlooking the grounds and everything was perfect. Highly recommended.

Lovely hotel on the edge of Ross on Wye. Staff very helpful and food excellent. We stayed on a Travelzoo offer which included a 3 course meal and it was nice to be able to choose from the a la carte menu instead of a set menu as you were given an allowance of £25 each.

I have stayed many times at this hotel and was booked in with my wife for an overnight stay combined with a dinner which included 6 friends living locally. Unfortunately, I was booked in the a 'superior' room - regrettably that was not a good description, although, presumably, it was superior to some of the other rooms. In addition, we found the spare towels (only 1 in the bathroom - which we shared) in the wardrobe upon departure - and no flannel. I know this hotel is better than that - pleasant staff and decent food - so come on The Chase - pull your socks up and get back to the old standards !

Room Tip: If you are used to 4 and 5 star hotels - don't stay in the Standard or Superior rooms

We had a lovely one night stay on special offer. Staff very helpful and friendly 5 out of 5. Meal 4.5 out of 5. Cleanliness 4.5 out of 5. View from room 3 out of 5 overlooking kitchen and the noise from the kitchen fan was off from 10pm to 6.10 am more than enough time to get a good night's sleep. Overall would return again.

An unplanned stay we picked it out from other people's reviews. Our room was "superior" which probably means bigger than average. Certainly it was big enough, save for the bath, but otherwise pretty standard except for the small and hard-to-use television.

It's a while since anywhere I've paid for has wanted an additional fee for WiFi. They didn't get my £5 since there was OK 3G mobile phone coverage. We didn't use the bar - there was a group of business chaps gets

I thought they were short staffed. Checking in wasn't quick because the receptionist was on the phone for some while, and the single waiter in the restaurant seemed to be stretched. Breakfast was a lot better.

We stayed at this hotel for one night on a Saturday. Room 28. We had a cheap deal through Travelzoo (actually matched by the hotel itself on its website too). So we paid £44.50 each for the night and this included a three course meal (up to £25 allowance) with a glass of prosecco and breakfast the following morning.

Check in was at 2.30pm (though I think you could check in earlier for a fee) and check out was at 11am.

Ok so lets start at the beginning. Check in was painless. The reception staff were really friendly and efficient (in fact all the staff were). We were told to follow the signs to our room - found it no problem.

First impressions of the room were that it was a bit small and a little shabby. Could do with some moderinising. The bathroom was fine - seemed a little bit more modern. Great shower. All very clean. Bed very comfortable. Only had one towel but phoned down to reception and in no time at all another was delivered to our room. (At this stage we were a little bit disappointed to be honest).

Went to dinner at our pre-booked time. The staff were great. The Spanish waitress in particular was extremely efficient and very friendly and the two waiters were just as efficient and very courteous. The food was lovely, great quality. We could only manage two courses so we didn't spend up to our allowance but coming from the Capital we were sure the same meal in London would have cost us around £30, especially taking into account the glass of bubbly (with dessert I'm sure it would have been more - the desserts looked delicious but we just couldn't manage it).

There was a charity function going on the night we stayed, which the hotel had forewarned us about. Though we could hear a kind of low rumble of noise from our room, it didn't disturb us at all and we slept well - the function must have finished at 12.30am as promised but I didn't even notice.

Breakfast the following morning was great. Same staff - same friendly service. (some guy at another table was making some kind of petty complaint to the waitress but she never lost her smile)

Check out was just as efficient and friendly as check in.

All in all a nice hotel. Really the way we looked at it was that the deal was all about the food - it was like getting a couple of great meals (dinner and breakfast) with a free night's accommodation thrown in. When looked at from this perspective, the fact that the room could have done with a little modernising seemed pretty trivial and completely inconsequential. Maybe if we had paid full price we would have been a little more critical.

Ross-On-Wye itself is a sweet looking little town and we spent a couple of hours having a look around. We found the locals really friendly (if you want a surreal "art" experience try the Centre for the Dull right at the other end of the main street - lots of demonic looking dolls arranged into art formations and tea strainers - we had a few laughs - all seemed very tongue in cheek, if a little on the dark side).

Symonds Yat is about 15 minute's drive away and is definitely worth seeing. If you have sat nav, set it to Symonds Yat for the general direction but then follow the road signs to Symonds Yat East, then you'll pick up the tourist signs to Symonds Yat Rock and the historic viewing point (our sat nav took us to Symonds Yat West, which is on the opposite hill and doesn't have "that" panoramic view).

All in all we enjoyed our stay at The Chase.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the hill and the al fresco dining (it was nice to hear the voices driftin...

The rooms are clean and tidy although a little small. Our room looked out onto the gardens at the rear. The Crocus were out and I am sure when all the flowers are in bloom it will look great.
The Hotel is only a short walk fromRoss-on Wye but I did not get a chance to see much of it.

The evening meal was very good and the service was excellent. Breakfast is served to you which makes a real change from the usula buffet.

They had a choice of fish too. Kippers or smoked Haddock. The haddock was lovely with 2 poached eggs.

Room Tip: Get one at the rear to overlook over the Garden.
