“Nice hotel, lovely setting, staff could be friendlier”
Reviewed November 14, 2011

We booked this hotel back in MAy and got two nights for the price of one through a mobile phone top up. The hotel was nice and clean, fairly quiet, although we were right over the function room. It was a bit noisy but didn't keep us awake.
I just felt the staff could have been friendlier and act more as if it were a pleasure to serve us, rather than a chore.
Other than breakfast, we did not eat in the hotel as we're not into posh food on a plate, and we found a nice little pub down the road.
Not sure I'd stay again, but no major gripes.

Room Tip: Make sure you're not immediately over the Oak Suite if you're a light sleeper

Two nights here for a weekend with a group of friends.

Great location on the edge of the town and easy walking distance to the centre. Wide breakfast selection served with a smile on both days. Set menu on the Saturday night had something for everyone and good value.

Everyone very welcoming but the owners could do with adding more staff in the restuarant. Those working were always under time pressure and stretched too far such that delays when dining were inevitable and it shouldn't take 3 requests for another bottle of wine to arrive

The building, grounds and downstairs were lovely and the hotel staff were extremely helpful and accommodating, but I have never stayed in such a noisy room! I was in room 18 overlooking the grounds so you would imagine it would be peaceful. Unfortunately the walls are made out of paper and I had guests next door to me who were up until past 1.00 am with the t.v. on, talking. I could hear everything including the lights being turned on and off, the toilet being flushed, even them getting in and out of bed - I certainly wouldn't expect this for the money paid! Then at 7.00 am I was woken by a loud whirring noise, which I can only assume were the guests on the other side taking a shower. Also very disappointed with the general decor and size of the room, definitely decorated to the standard of a Travel Lodge and not in keeping with the look of the building which is quite misleading.

We sTayed for two nights and paid for an upgrade to an executive room. We were looking forward to a spacious room with views of the grounds and a jacuzzi bath.

Our room was no bigger than a travel lodge room. The decor was dated and the furniture was not in keeping with the age of the building. Our bed was comfortable but small and the bathroom, although nicely decorated, was cramped? The bath was small and the most basic spa bath I've ever seen? Certainly not the jacuzzi bath I was looking forward to after a long day on the river. Our view of the grounds was actually a view of the car park!

Some areas of the hotel were nicely decorated but much of the furniture looked like ikea or Argos, which is fine but doesnt really suit a Georgian manor house. On the first floor, there is a landing area with 4 leather office chairs and a black coffee table. Like something from an 80s yuppy pad!

The staff were friendly but not well trained at all. One poor lad was placed in the bar with no training and then the restaurant staff ridiculed him in front of the guests when he made a mistake.

All in all, it would be ok at travel lodge prices but we were hoping for a bit of luxury at the prices charged for an executive room.

Not many places to eat in Ross on Wye but we would recommend the King's Head Hotel for food and service.

Stayed over night after my son's wedding. The hotel staff were very helpful and friendly.
We stayed in a family room with my granson sleeping on a bed-settee. The room was simple , but clean and of a reasonable size.
The food at the reception was excellent and breakfast catered for most tastes.
I would recommend the hotel for a wedding as it has lovely gardens, excellent food and well trained and thoughtful staff.

Room Tip: Room 37 was fairly quiet despite the disco. However it was a long walk after a few drinks!

The older part of the building was nice but the newer parts are drab and need a fresh coat of paint. We were in room 18 which was very much like a travel in room but for twice the price. The toilet leaked and there was signs of previous flood damage. Very disappointing. Friendly staff were the only saving grace for this visit.

I stayed at the Chase Hotel for a wedding. It was a lovely quaint hotel, in the centrre of Ross on Wye. Beautiful surroundings. The room was clean, tidy and fresh looking. As it was our wedding anniversary we stayed in the executive room, which was larger than the standard room plus it had a jacuzzi bath. The hotel had a cosy and homely feel to it. The staff were polite and courteous, considering it was a hotel, the drinks were reasonably priced, the food at the wedding was outstanding. I would definately stay there again.
