our stay was four nights 15th to 18 september
agree bedroom furniture was worn in places, and the window seals not the windows were rather dirty, but the room was clean and tidy and had a charm (beams across the ceiling) which went well with this former coaching inn. all the public rooms reception, dining room, bars and lounges were decorated to a good order, we found the staff to be friendly and the breakfast was good. the hotel stands in a great position with lovely views over the river and countryside.
our conclusion is that the 3 star rating given by the AA is about right and if you can get a special deal like we did pay for two nights get another two nights free it is good value for money.

We stayed at the Royal for a weekend. Friday and Saturday. The hotel looks nice enough from the outside, and is well located for the town. Also there is ample parking.
We checked in after waiting several minutes for anyone to even notice we were standing at the desk.
The room was adaquate. A little small and the windows were dirty, but the beds and bathroom were clean - and we had a great view from our room.
We were a set of towels short and when we mentioned this at reception they seemed uninterested - but the towles were in the room when we got back.
The terrace bar had good views, but the again the staff were a little stand offish. We did not eat in the bistro or restaurant - but can recommend the China Boy Jo chinesse resaurant.
Breakfast was very good, and the staff here friendly.

In conclusion: quiet, good views, and close to restaurants - but let down by some staff.

The room was a decent size but the window frames were filthy and we didn't want to touch them to open them. Furniture very tired and looked past it. The bath was dirty and full of hairs - we had to get someone up to clean it as my daughter refused to use it. The shower mat was mouldy and we took it down to reception and gave it to them. One meal was OK but the other one - spaghetti carbonara - was laced with chunks of raw garlic and inedible. We pointed all this out the next morning and they took the spaghetti off the bill, but frankly I felt the dirt warranted more.
