“Our Stay at the Ross Royal”
Reviewed December 6, 2011

We stayed for the night of 11 November having booked via The Old English Inns scheme. We had a very comfortable room in the new wing with views over the river. Everything was clean and tidy and the staff friendly, true its not the Ritz but your not paying Ritz prices.
The food in the restaurant was excellent and we particularly enjoyed the Friday Sizzler which was fantastic value for money. The restaurant was fully booked, atmospheric and cosy for dinner with candles on our table, it was a touch on the dark side for breakfast (light bulbs in all of the fittings would help). Service for dinner was excellent but a shade slow for breakfast. An excellent location to visit Ross. The outside of the hotel was being painted whilst we were. It represents excellent VFM

we stayed in this hotel in november for two nights. From the young lady at reception to the cleaners the staff were fantastic. The rooms were clean and warm. The food we had on both evenings were spot on for the money as was breaktast. I can only say that both the town and hotel were fantastic !!

Room Tip: take first floor no lifts

We booked for a one night stay through the Old English Inns website. Check-in was friendly and efficient. We stayed in room 2, a standard room that was a reasonable size and had two comfy chairs, so no falling out about who gets the armchair! Usual Old English Inns comfy bed. The en suite needed updating but it was clean. We seemed to be an an old decor bit of the hotel. I paid £40 B&B for two guests in a double room (non flexible) and for the money it was OK value.

The hotel is high up with good views to the front and a car park to the rear. The public areas (the bar/restaurant etc) are nicely presented and modern.

We ate in the pub and probably should have taken heed of the other reviews on here. If you stick to the ‘two meals for £10.45’ it’s OK but paying full whack (as we did) for a main course meant a tenner a head - it just wasn’t worth it. The beef stew consisted of three bits of beef. There was a good selection of ales and wines so we were OK (!) and tucked ourselves up by the open fire.

Having eaten in the evening at other Old English Inns the food at The Royal was no better or worse than them. If that’s the overall standard then fair enough but at 'ful whack' it is overpriced. I think they are missing a trick; this company have some smashing hotels and it’s a shame the food falls a bit short.

Breakfast was good and with us quickly. Be aware that it is all packed away by 10am, so if you want a lie-in I’d say 09:30 is the latest you should leave it for brekkie if you want a leisurely graze of the cold items. Good selection from what I saw.

Overall we had a pretty good stay and the staff were all really pleasant and chatty.

If I could I would have scored inbetween a 3 and a 4. I am not generally a moaner but they need to invest in the rooms - ours was a bit tired and the windows didn't close. If I'd forked out more than 40 quid I'd have been disappointed.

Thank you for visiting us at The Royal and for taking the time to write a review. I'm pleased that you enjoyed your stay and our super comfy beds. We serve Breakfast in the Bar until midday, so next time you visit us, you don't need to worry about getting up early. Just ask your waiter for any of the buffet items in the bar and they will bring it to you at your table, once we have packed the buffet away. You are even able to check out at 11am and then have breakfast, mornings should be leisurely affairs.

Recently stayed for a Friday night in the Royal Hotel in Ross on Wye. The room was of a good size and in proportion to the cost of the night including a substantial breakfast felt it was very good value. The hotel is excellently positioned to explore Ross. Would recommend to anyone. One last point - I was surprised at the comments regarding poor service. I found the staff to be very attentive and genuinely keen to please especially the lads in the main restaurant,

Great hotel for a couple of days away. Large bedroom with its own mini balcony with very pleasant views over the river Wye.All the staff were very friendly, service was slick and the food was fine - especially 2 perfect poached eggs on Sunday morning!Would stay there again. Any chance of new curtains in Room 43?

Room Tip: If you have stairs issues - make sure you tell them in advance

We have just spent two days at your hotel and have to say what a wonderful and refreshing experience. Staff were exceptional, particularly around room choice as I had my elderly mother with me. Service was out of this world, prompt, accommodating and efficient. Food was absolutely delicious with plenty of choice. Views spectacular and within walking distance of the quaint little town of Ross on Wye. My partner and I travel and stay in many hotels for a living all over the world and this was one of the best! Thanks to all the staff at the hotel :)

Room Tip: The hotel is large and interestingly quaint with log fires in the bars. Some rooms are in the stabl...
