“So poor”
Reviewed October 28, 2011

When we arrived the building was surrounded with scaffolding, not the end of the world but it would have been nice if Greene King had bothered to tell us in advance. Of course they wouldn’t because they would lose business. Having complained we were moved to the annex where there was no scaffolding, but a terrible smell of damp.
We booked this because of the location and the views, well the scaffolding prevented this, as there was no access to the outside viewing area.
On arrival we did book a daily newspaper for the 3 mornings we were there, and you have to play a game to find it, like hunt the paper, clue :- try the dining room; would have been useful to be told this
PENNY PINCHING
Cheap, and I mean CHEAP toilet paper, 2 coffee sachets in the room
They also had fire doors locked, and when this was pointed out, it was not taken well
THE BAR – ok its GK ales, so they are average, but £2.40 for a tonic and a dash of soda is a RIP OFF. The staff, dominate the bar, when they are not working; and one member of staff was under the influence and working, not acceptable
RESTURANT- food is SO average, we went to the KINGS HEAD where they cook the food rather than put it in the microwave
BREAKFAST – well if there was an award for miserable looking people these guys win hands down
In summary no one at this hotel seems to care, there is no manager and no supervisors
If they put a decent manager and team in place this could be a great place to stay, until then, we will be staying somewhere else on our return

Room Tip: ask if there is still work going on!!

Thank you for taking the time to put your review on Trip Advisor and for writing to us. As I mentioned when I spoke to you and in my letter, we are really sorry that you did not enjoy your stay and we have already made a couple of changes to the way we do things and will be reviewing a couple of your other points too. Our service is usually far better and we just seemed to have had a hiccup the other week, which we have discussed as a team and are rectifying our shortcomings.

We stayed for 2 nights. The hotel is clean and the scenery is stunning. The evening meals were tasty and service was reasonable. The major issue was with breakfast. The service was appalling. We waited 30 minutes before our meal to arrive after ordering. It took 15 minutes before anyone actually took our order. The coffee arrived 40 minutes after our order and the toast never arrived. We asked 3 times for our coffee and toast but still no joy. We complained to management and our breakfast cost was refunded. Breakfast on the 2nd day was better but service was still slow and disorganised. If you want to stay at this hotel (and the setting is beautiful) do it on room only basis and get breakfast at McDonalds.

Stayed in June and really enjoyed our suite, albeit a bit expensive. Decided to return with friends using our Tesco vouchers. I emailed hotel requesting two rooms with river views and very quickly received a lovely reply informing us of the rooms allocated.
On arrival we were given Room 10, very tricky to get to, up very narrow stairs and Room 3 at the back of the hotel overlooking the carpark. There was no sign of the river! We returned to Reception and received a mediocre response. There was no record of my request. We were then offered two further rooms but told to decide if we wanted them without seeing them as the hotel was full.
We insisted that we wanted to view the rooms first and had to do so in record time.
Unfortunately for us the painters had just arrived and were errecting scaffolding outside our window, room 17, so the beautiful view was obliterated and we had to keep the curtains closed as the men were working immediately outside.
Our friends were very pleased with their room in the Prospect Wing, room 45, with two double beds.
The Bar staff were very friendly, a special mention to Adam, a new member of staff who went out of his way to make our stay enjoyable.
The breakfast staff didn't smile or make any conversation and had to be approached for coffee, toast, clearing of tables etc. A definite need for PR training in there.
We love Ross on Wye, the scenery is beautiful and we were blessed with wonderful weather. Would I go back to the Royal? Hopefully one day but don't know if I am ready to recommend it to friends as I did in June.

Room Tip: Email /phone hotel before arrival. Take copy of email with you or take down name of receptionist.Ask...

Thank you for your review. I apologise for our mistake with your room, I have spoken to our receptionist and explained how important it is that we deliver what we promise and have also spoken to them about the way you were offered alternate rooms. I can assure you that we are usually much better than this, as you have witnessed when you stayed with us in June. The good news is that the painters are almost finished and the hotel is starting to look fantastic, so next time you are in the area, you must come up and have a look.

I travel a lot for work and tend to pick the worst hotels in the country so I was a bit surprised with the value I recieved from my stay at the royal. The location is breathtaking and altough the building could do with a bit of paint work it still had a very traditional style to it. The food was good and the staff was great, from the chambermaid to the manager all had a big smile and nothing seemed to much. Will be returning soon! Keep it up

We stayed for one night and to be fair i think the staff are doing the best with what they have. Effort has gone in to some refurbishing. As previous review said our room had clean linen but the overall standard of cleanliness could have been better. The room was spacious but not well maintained. Staff were friendly and really they made our stay. We will not return to stay here

Room Tip: Not Sure maybe asked for a room that has been decorated

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your recent stay. We have only just this week started to repaint the exterior of the hotel, and this should be complete within the next 6 weeks. I'm also in the process of employing an additional handyman, so that we can start to refurbish the bedrooms through the winter months, we are hoping to get at least 12 more rooms painted. I have had a word with my Head housekeeper and have set a meeting to speak to the whole housekeeping team for tomorrow morning to address the issue of cleanliness in the bedrooms. Should you decide to return to Ross, please give me a call so that I may show you our upcoming changes to the hotel.

Staff on reception were unfriendly and unhelpful. Our room, Room 10, was up two flights of stairs at the back of the premises; the second set of stairs were very steep, dark and dirty. Door to room should have been warning enough as it was battered and marked. Although the room was large and linens were clean, paper was peeling off the ceiling, mold was on shower curtain and tiles, patches of enamel were missing on the bath, paint on radiators peeling off on to the floor and generator near to room was very noisey. Need I say more!

Stayed here through Airmiles, 24th 25th September had a great weekend. 1st room was 42 which was in the annox looking over the garden and fountain with a balcony and 2 double beds big lcd tv and lovely big bath. Great room but the central heating/water kept us up all night very noisy. Next day we asked to move and even thought the hotel was full, reception found us a room in the main hotel which was quite small 1 double and a much smaller tv, no bath but this suited us much better! also it had long distance views over the river, so if staying you may wish to request either room depednign on your preference. The only thing i didnt like was having to have my credit card scanned on arrival - even though we paid in advance - some people dont mind but this did annoy me personally a bit.
All staff are lovely, when we made requested extra milk, extra coffee at breakfast everyone was lovely! The rooms were both immaculate and i am really fussy! the linens were crisp and clean.A great stay and will be back in the future. Job well done :)

Room Tip: room 42 has 2 doubles and a garden view
