Recently visited the Royal at Ross for a week-end break. We were given a very friendly welcome and our room was spacious and very clean. We ate in the restaurant and the food was reasonable and good quality (although not huge portions).

Breakfast was very reasonably priced, although tables could have been cleared sooner as unsure where to sit and young waiting staff seemed to lack direction a bit.

Would recommend a stay at this great hotel, lovely views and a great location with friendly staff - they didnt even mind us dinging their reception bell as we walked past. Many thanks for a lovely stay and warm welcome.

could not fault this hotel--the receptionist was friendly, bubbly and welcoming. Every member of staff made the stay an enjojable one. I couldn't believe the value of this hotel. The view from our room was lovely overlooking the river. Breakfast was good---plenty of choice --a breakfast bar with cereals, yoghurts and a variety of juices, jams and pastries. The cooked breakfast was one of the best--the menu was fantastic with a choice of cooked english to LockFyne smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.
Our room lacked nothing--staff happy to supply extra tea, coffee and milk--a bargain break for an exceptional price. Will be going back at some point.

Just recently stayed at The Royal and loved every minute.
I found this hotel through trip advisor and have read many of the reviews. I decided to try it regardless of the mixed comments on here.
So pleasantly surprised. We arrived just after 3 and the hotel was bustling, but not overly busy. We sat out on the terrace and enjoyed the views across the Wye, stunning! The staff seemed very pleasant, very helpful.
We checked in to our room which was above the coach wing and all though there are creaky floor boards and it is a little dated, it was lovely. Like being in an old cottage.
There was so much character in the hotel. Some of the rooms are named after Charles Dickens characters, which i found out from the reception staff. Breakfast and the meals are great. I suggest coming to this hotel if you enjoy the oldness of buildings, including creaky floor boards and winding staircases. To quote one of the reception ladies 'its part of the Old English Inns experience'. I totally agree!
The town itself is also something to see. Many quaint little shops and boutiquey cafes.
We strolled along the river too which is exceptional!

The Royal Hotel is a grand old hotel, with plenty of charm. The best thing about the hotel are the friendly staff who couldn't do enough for the guests, I witnessed a large group hugging the staff goodbye, they had had such a wonderful time. The building needs a paint, but this has all been signed off, according to the manager, so hopefully The Royal will be looking even better than it does now, in the near future.

Room Tip: Book direct with the hotel and ask for a view!!!

We stayed for three nights. The beds are very comfortable and the room spotlessly clean. The staff are courteous and friendly and do their very best to make you feel at home. Our only complaint was that because we had a ground floor room with a sliding patio door we were unable to sleep with a window open and the room was very warm. Out of the three evenings we only used the hotel for dining once, and that meal was fine. All breakfasts were alright with plenty of choice on the menu. The location of the hotel is wonderful offering some magnificent views especially from the terrace. We would definately use this hotel again

Room Tip: I think an upgrade is £10 - room with better view.

If this hotel was in private hands then it would get 5 across the board. We stayed in room 30 which is huge. Twin aspect, triple bedded and comfortable. As with all busy hotels it could do with a bit of updating but only minor things. However, where the management fail is in the dining scene. It is awful!!. The menu is what in the trade is called a PING MENU - that is the sound a microwave makes. Everything on the menu can be bought off the shelves of even the smallest shop. The waiting staff are polite but, to be kind, poorly trained. We were on holiday so came down for breakfast just before 9am. Every table was covered in the left overs from previous diners. Help yourself to the buffet while I clear a table was the comment every morning. Every morning I pointed out that the buffet was virtually empty. The only glasses remaining were the ones with lipstick on them. Every morning we were not the last down so others had to wait for a table as well. We then had the spectacle of waiters with huge trays being loaded as this mess was cleared. I am sure in private management this would not be allowed to happen. To be fair, when we did get the breakfast it was very nice with a good choice. I will give you a tip - if you are looking for the manager he is the man somewhere in the background in a shirt with the sleeves rolled up - we thought he was the odd job man.
