We saw the poor tripadvisor reviews, but looked in at the restaurant and it seemed quiet - there were a number of older couples there. When we sat down, we realised that most were waiting either to have an order taken or to get attention. We were served before another couple who had arrived earlier.

Staff for were rushed off their feet. They were friendly, but seem poorly trained in customer facing. The meal itself was rubber chicken - only just edible, Breakfast was little better - one excellent waitress, one surly.

When we checked out, we found that we had been overcharged for the evening meal, but this was put right immediatly with apologies when we pointed it out. Overall, the stay was not bad - most of the staff were excellent - but it was let down by the restaurant.

The moral - don't ignore tripadvisor.

“Wonderful views over the bend in the Wye and the surrounding countryside.”

Service was not very swift. Probably more staff were needed in the kitchen. We were brought our order twice and so too were others dining there!

“Fine 'Old English Inns' hotel”
Reviewed April 24, 2013

Stayed for two nights and had dinner in their restaurant on Friday night. Rooms were fine but a little tired. Dining room is one huge room, so not private or relaxing. Food OK but not memorable. Hotel bar has good views over the Wye valley.

“lunch”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

Having eaten here before, we were disappointed with lunch on saturday 13th April. Firstly when ordering drinks after waiting for about 10 minutes at the bar, we ordered 2 x lager shandy but were told the coke/lemonade machine had exploded that morning so they could only offer lemonade from a bottle, (no problem with that then ?), but were then told we would have to pay more for the shandy as they had to open the bottle of lemonade !! Did wonder why we had to pay extra just because their machine had broken. Anyway onto lunch, started with fish goujons on wilted salad, not very nice. After about 20 mins and having to ask where our mains were. Pear & walnut salad again with wilted rocket leaves and paella which was not very tasty. The decore definitely needs a lick of paint and a good clean up, tables and floors felt sticky and unclean and glass doors behind bar were all stained and the wine bottles covered in dust. Very disappointing for an Old English Inn.
But as a plus point the staff were very polite and the view is lovely. Will only return if can sit outside on a nice summers eveing and have a drink only.

“Lunch with a view”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

We were in Ross for a weekend break and staying at The Chase but I had heard about the views from the Riverside Bar at the Royal. They have one of the best views of the Wye in town with a large deck outside the bar.The view and beer were very good but the food was average and overpriced. Charles Dickens visited this hotel in 1864 and the prints outside the bar remind you of this. Next time I visit it will be for the beer and view only.
