We had a gloriously sunny week staying in this beautiful part of Devonshire at this lovely house. As mentioned by most previous reviewers the house was well appointed and perfect for our party of 10 which included four young children. My parents 'the grandparents' very much enjoyed the very spacious master suite with its private bathroom and balcony. The bedrooms were clean and comfortable and the twin room was prepared ahead of our arrival as a double for my husband and myself. Plentiful towels and bedding were supplied along with posh branded shampoo and soap in the bathrooms! We had a couple of chilly evenings but found the additional electric heaters in the coolest bedrooms easy to operate. Downstairs was excellent for the kids as they had so much space and really enjoyed the playroom and the private garden. The kitchen and lounge were ample and any previous negative comments about decor are ludicrous as the sofas and furniture were smart and comfortable. All was perfect for a holiday let and lets be honest, I for one wouldn't be able to relax in a pristine house! There were lovely touches with the fresh scones and wine on arrival and although we had most provisions covered by a Tesco delivery, there was tea, coffee and jugs of milk in the fridge. Having the facilities of the hotel available to us was a real bonus as we all enjoyed the indoor pool several times and the small playground was also well used by the kids. If the weather hadn't been so kind then these facilities would have been invaluable. We found the staff friendly and helpful and when we realised we had not ordered any flour in our shop to make a cheese sauce with, the chefs in the restaurant were only too happy to give us a tub! The adults also enjoyed using the jacuzzi at the house in the evenings - it was level enough and adequately full of soothing warm water. We enjoyed sitting in it listening to the local owl hooting and gazing at the stars (so please don't cover it with a gazebo!!!). As for its size, 4 adults could use it comfortably so again the previous reviewer who complained it was only big enough for two is talking nonsense. Finally the local area was stunning and we walked down to Soar cove several times (approx 15 mins walk with little ones) and enjoyed time on the beach with the children. The beach is best at low tide when its gorgeous sand and rock pools are fully exposed and there are fab opportunities for dam building! A lovely holiday that we shall remember fondly.

“Lovely family weekend”

West Soar is a lovely self catering property nestled in the grounds of the Hotel, surrounded by glorious views and great walking. We found the property to be well equipped with everything we needed for a gun family weekend. I have to say that I'm surprised by one of the previous reviews relating to the poor standard of furniture and decor but we thought the house was lovely and the furnishings appeared to be quite new and there certainly was enough lounge and dining seating for our group of 8 "grown ups".
The house itself sits away from the hotel in a secluded location with wonderful views from the large picture windows at the front, here I found my perfect spot for a morning cup of tea while the rest of the house was still sleeping.
The isolated position of the house and hotel provides glorious peace and quiet, and great walking. Thoughtful extras were included, we were greeted with wine and scones cream and jam on the kitchen table for our arrival, there were magazines and books, a selection of dvds, umberella and crabbing nets, teabags, sachets of coffee, a large jug of milk in the fridge and dishwasher tablets, bin bags, toilet rolls and towels were also included along with small bars of hand soap in the bathrooms. For all of your other self catering needs I suggest you shop before you arrive as it is a bit of a drive to a decent sized supermarket and can be a pain if you are driving backwards and forwards several times to get forgotten essentials during your holiday.
We were a family group of seven adults and one child and found the accommodation to be well equipped, clean, comfortable, warm and homely. There are five comfortable well decorated bedrooms and three bathrooms ; an extremely large master ensuite complete with little balcony, a further double room, a twin room (which we asked to be made up as a double, the staff were very accommodating of this request) a room with a set of bunkbeds, and a small twin room in what I presume is the converted attic space accessed via a small narrow staircase. The downstairs accommodation consists of a good sized family kitchen with everything you could need to cater for a group, including dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, large range style cooker, farmhouse table and chairs. There is a separate dining area too and large lounge with those stunning views. The games room complete with table tennis and table football is off the kitchen there is a sofa bed in the games room along with a shower and toilet. Doors from the games room lead out onto the patio where there is a good sized hot tub, I would say the hot tub has been designed for three or four people but it's very roomy and we managed to squeeze six adults in it (although we had to refill it from the hosepipe the next morning) . We visited out of season and there was an extra charge for the use of the hot tub, but it was warm and ready to use as soon as we arrived which we appreciated. Also on the patio was a good set of outdoor furniture, but it wasn't the right weather for sitting outside, I believe there is also a barbecue but we didn't get opportunity to use this (maybe next time).

“Disappointing weekend away with friends - poor quality and not fit-for-purpose holiday let”
Reviewed December 21, 2015 for a stay in November 2015

As a group of close friends we booked the Private House at Soar Mill Cove for a weekend break. Advertised as sleeping 10 the house was perfect for 6 single friends who wanted to relax with a glass of wine, DVD, Hot Tub and a few hours spent reading overlooking the ocean.

Our weekend was spoilt from the start. We arrived at the property after a long drive south in hope of a quick cup of tea, whilst the owners did provide two bottles of wine and some scones there was no provision of any tea or coffee nor any basic kitchen items. Wine doesn’t make up for the lack of basic provisions and the other issues within the property...

The crockery in the kitchen was dirty - some with toast and butter still on them - clearly poor housekeeping / checking between guests.

The former family home of the hotel owners is clearly being used as a cash cow. There is a sign in the kitchen saying "We the owners now live next door and you are in our former family home” - this has clearly resulted in them not investing in their former house. The decor leaves a lot to be desired with large areas in need of attention.

The property is set on the top of a hill and is subject to the winds coming off the ocean. Whilst the views are stunning when the sun is out it is a shame that the windows of the property are dirty and don't fit properly. The double glazing was so poor the wind was blowing the curtains open and keeping most of us awake at night. The large picture window in the 'sun' room was so poorly fitted water was streaming in!!

As a result of the poorly fitted windows, some of us were sleeping in jumpers as the wind in the upper rooms (attic room especially) was blowing through the gaps in the glazing turning the rooms into ice boxes - this wasn't helped by the lack of heating controls in the property. The heating was set to turn off in the evening with no clear way of turning it back on.

A relaxing peaceful break this was not, unless you sleep next to a wind machine and are used the constant howl coming through the gaps in the glazing.

The Hot Tub was only for 2 people (3 max) and completely unsuitable for the size of property. It was installed on a slope and not levelled which meant it wasn't full of water. It was also not protected so with the Devon winds it was unusable (even though you have to pay for the privilege of not using it). Maybe they could spend the money on building a shed around the hot tub or a Gazebo with side panelling to make it user friendly all year round.

As a group of friends it is nice to sit together in the evenings, however, there isn't enough seating in the property and not enough in one area for everyone to sit comfortably. All the furniture is tired and most is thread bare in areas. To get enough seats in one area we had to move sofa's and arm chairs in order to be together.

Moving the furniture further showed how unclean the property was, whilst most areas had clear evidence of being hovered, the bedrooms had a significant amount of hair and the bathrooms are in dire need of some TLC.

My final views are this property is that it is not fit-for-purpose as a holiday let. It is a former family house that is in need of some urgent TLC. It is unclean, tired, not well maintained and not worth the money!!

Oh dear, Jenny and I are devastated that you seem not to have enjoyed your stay, despite that you mentioned none of this when staying with us. Of course if we and been told any of this, we could have rectified it then and there, as surely that is the reason for constructive criticism. We are always at hand and we have a full staff to show how the heating works, whether you want extra crockery or any question what so ever. It was incredibly windy when you were with us, winter by the seaside can be although we personally love the bracing winter weather cozied up indoors. It does seem that this has spoilt your stay and rather influenced a review that seems somewhat harsh. West Soar is now in its sixth year and we are working our way through a renovation program so that it is fresh for our 2016 guests. I don't think 6 years is a terribly long time but as West Soar is so special to me and Jenny we want to ensure it is beautiful for all guests.
Again I am sorry that West Soar was clearly not for you.

“Nicely located and presented family house by the sea”
Reviewed November 22, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

We had a memorable double family celebration here with 6 adults and three children. We were lucky with the weather but the games room/spacious house and the indoor pool provided back-up for that anyway
.Private from the hotel but easy access for tennis, swimming etc helped the overall relaxed ambience. Pleasant ,safe, grounds for the little ones.
We liked the 15 min stroll down to the bay but found ideal beaches nearby at Bantham and Salcombe. All beds comfortable and all facilities that you would expect in a family holiday house. We look forward to returning
