I feel very strongly about our recent visit to South Sands boutique hotel. We saved really hard for this holiday and were looking forward to staying there. It was the first time we brought our dog along with us, having been recommended as a dog friendly hotel by Cesar's Paws!

The roads that lead to this hotel are all single track roads which are dangerous, it is very hilly and the beach not very nice and doesn't allow dogs during high season.

On arrival at the reception we were shown around our room and were asked if we needed a hand with the luggage, by which time I had already brought it in! I was disappointed that there was no Air-conditioning in the room, It got very warm during the night and when I opened the windows, to allow some fresh air, I was bitten several times which resulted in me closing them and waking up very dehydrated! On a good note I'm glad the complimentary water was cold.

We paid an extra £12.50 per night for a small dog mat and dog bowl which was provided. There were no dog treats for him. There were no complimentary tissues, no cotton buds or any cotton wool! I read through the information pack and it said that you can pay for a shaving kit at the main reception, having paid £250.00 per night I would have expected a little more!

The restaurant/bar area is very small and noisy, the staffs are in-experienced with dealing with customers and they are laid back, with a poor attitude. The menu is expensive and restricted in choices, no real vegetarian options. As we were dining with our dog we were made to sit in the bar area, they made a complete disaster of our meal on the first night and I cancelled our future reservations at the restaurant.

Breakfast on all three mornings! The table was never set in the bar area, we were overlooked as we were not dining in the restaurant! In my view the tables that are opposite the bar area in the restaurant, are far enough away from any kitchen or food sources, why were we not allowed to sit on them, although you are advertising as a dog friendly hotel! We felt that we were being treated differently! We waited longer than other people for our drinks and plates & cutlery were not cleared regularly! It was as if no one cared or could be bothered!

Out of all the staff that was in the hotel not one member made a fuss about our dog! I've had more of a welcome in the local pubs/Bistro in Thurlstone & Totnes. As I said before, that we were really looking forward to staying at South Sands, it is a lovely hotel very clean and fresh, however we are very disappointed with the way we were treated during our stay. I was reluctant to write this feedback as without feedback you cannot improve.

The hotel has since declined any form of compensation and is not interested with complaints from customers and I am seeking legal advise on the matter as they have not met their contractual agreements.

This is a beautiful looking hotel, in a lovely spot ( though the road there is a bit scary). I had read good things about it in the press shortly after it opened. Our room was ready though we arrived early and we were shown up to it right away. The view out over the beach was lovely, but even with the french windows open, the room was very hot, though the weather was not particularly warm. Tucked under the roof, perhaps the insulation is not very effective.
Very little choice on the tv, but thats not a big deal.
What is a bigger thing is that there is no where other than the bar to sit in the hotel. Yes, there is a lovely deck, but if the weather is not good, you only can sit in the bar. And the bar became very noisy on the first night we were there.
The service in the bar for drinks and food is laid back, and not very reliable -
The food - again, had read good things. I live in London, we eat out a lot, and this menu was quite simple, no daily specials, no vegetarian options, and VERY expensive, for what you got. Because the menu doesn't change, and is not very large, if you stayed for very long, you might be disappointed.
That is a lot of buts, and I am sorry for that, but this is a hotel that promises much, but isn't really delivering and is expensive for what it offers.

Room Tip: Dragon rooms looking on beach good, but hot

Fresh looking hotel with a typical nautical feel. The whole place has fantastic craftsmanship - the staircase a must see! Although we didn't stay I expect the rooms are fitted out to an equally high standard. We found a table outside on the balcony and settled in for a relaxing afternoon overlooking the beach. Pity the sun never arrived but it was great to relax with a beer & wine and freshly cooked fish and chips. Ok at around £15 for fish and chips its not the cheapest so it has to be top quality. And it is. The menu in either the restaurant or bar may appear somewhat limited with quite a few 'sharing dishes' up around the £40 mark - but I think its worthy as they do not appear to compromise on quality, keeping the ingredients local and fresh.
The place was so relaxing we did feel like we were finally on holiday.

We had 3 nights at this hotel and as we had never been to Salcome we were hoping the hotel would be great - it was more than great. The roads to it are a bit hairy, narrrow hairpin bends but well worth it. Its very new right on the beach and rebuilt to such a a high standard. It is decorated in a nautical theme and all the fitting had been thought through. Even the hook on the back of the door in the loo in reception was a silver yacht! The food was excellent and the staff could not have been more helpful, especially Yvonne at Reception. We will be back and look forward to it.
thanks for a delightful hotel

The restaurant is an very good fish restaurant with a great view of the South Sands estuary. The service is mixed. The bar area is very small so it is difficult to have a glass of wine before or after dinner. We has requested a window table for two and were instead seated in the most remote area--we watched as throughout our dinner three tables for two were not occupied. There was a wedding party in place and all other customers were treated as outsiders by the harried and over-worked staff. They would have been better advised to close the restaurant to any one that was not a member of the wedding party. The fish was very good, the other dishes were average and we had better dinners in the area.

We had heard a lot about the Restaurant at South Sands Hotel and the menu looked great. There was a big event going on when we went to have dinner and the staff was preoccupied with that event. The bar was crowded and we couldn't get anyone to serve us. We finally had to walk to the bar to get a drink and even then were ignored for awhile. We had a reservation for dinner and were given one of the worst tables that looked at the back side of the reservation center. Several tables were waterside and were left empty the entire time we were there. The food was excellent. The ambiance could have been great if given a better table. We had reservations here for at least a month before. The service slow. I want to believe the experience was bad because of the event but then wonder why they didn't just close it off to the private event.

Room Tip: We did not stay at the hotel. Only ate at the restaurant. With the location, would recommend a w...
