“Very bad experience”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2013

After reading trip advisor and living realitively new in the area we tried out this pub for the first time. We were grateful to get a seat as all the tables seem to be reserved, we had to be out after an hour which I thought was fair enough given the fact we didn't reserve a table. I wish now we had been turned away. The food was terrible. We were in the restaurant 30 minutes after the restaurant opened and my guess is the jacket potatoes were cooked the day before as the potatoes was brown, I just couldn't eat it. I said to the waitress I am not one to usually complain but the food is really over cooked, after going away to say something to who ever she came back and said I'm sorry about that. No offer of a complimentary desert or coffee. Would not rush to go back there again.

“Delighted to return!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 8, 2013

We have eaten here many times over the past ten years and have never been disappointed and this latest visit was no exception. The Peter Tavy Inn combines a good local village pub atmosphere with a friendly and satisfying dining experience. The beer and cider - we sampled both between us - was very good and we were given well placed tables on both evenings that we dined there. Our meals were excellent: venison casserole with a herb crust and, on the second evening, beef and stilton pie, both served with saute potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Portions were very generous and a main course was, for us, enough alone. We will return - often I hope - and we thoroughly recommend the Peter Tavy Inn to anyone who wants to enjoy generous servings of delicious food in a pub setting.

“Not as good as it used to be.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

Went here for Sunday lunch with my 86-year old Dad last week. The food here was always consistently good, but this time I as disappointed. We both chose the Sunday Roast Beef. Vegetables were nice, but the meat, Yorkshire Pudding and potatoes were not. Potatoes were clearly prepared in advance as they were tough and difficult to cut, and then the meat was stringy and tough. The knife that we were given would not cut it! Then it was all smothered in salty gravy. It would have been nice to have been given the gravy in a jug.

“Average dining experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2013

As visitors in Tavistock, we chose to eat dinner at the Peter Tavy Inn based on its Trip Advisor reviews and were overall disappointed. We enjoyed the atmosphere but unfortunately weren't impressed with the food. We had an Italian antipasto plate as a starter and were surprised to see only 4 small slices of meat along with its accompaniments. The sunblushed tomatoes were good but the olives were not very flavorful. The chicken dish stuffed with goats cheese and served with a thyme lemon sauce sounded lovely but was underwhelming and the rump steak was flavorful but tough.

“food, food Glorious food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 15, 2013

This lovely country pub is an oasis for food. The menu is above pub food but not too expensive - £10-£18 covers most main dishes. (You won't need a starter!). The choice is varied with steaks, fish, pies and casseroles. All are served with delightful saute potatoes (options if required) and a selection of vegetables.
The pies are all home made and are a slice out of a larger pie. The flavour oozes out over the whole plate and is tasty from the first mouthful to the last.
There is a wide selection of desserts for those than can manage one, each nicely presented.
The bar is small and often holds just a few locals sampling the guest and resident beers. A good touch is a list of 5 or 6 wines available by the glass.
Whenever we have been the place is busy. Of a summer's evening the beer garden is often packed out with diners and walkers alike.
Its a bit off the beaten track and takes a bit of finding, but is sign posted from the main A386 some 2 miles away. Its definitely worth the journey.
