Description: Historic hotel at the gateway to Dartmoor. Built by the Duke of Bedford on the site of Tavistock Abbey where the very first Cream Teas were invented and are still served today. The hotel oozes with charming features which hark back to a gentler time and its location provides guests with a close walk up on to the Dartmoor National Park.

We attended a family celebration dinner at The Bedford for about 20 people. We had a panelled dining room looking out on the church.
The (pre-arranged) menu choice was very good and the service exemplary.
I feel The Bedford did us proud.

I have been very disappointed with my experiences here. Both times I have eaten in the bar area, which offers a nice view out to the old Abbey ruins. The food is fine, nothing incredible, but nice and well cooked. What let us down was the service - almost an hour for 3 panini's and a jacket potato. After 45 minutes we asked if there was a problem, and were simply given an off hand "it'll be with you soon". We didn't feel looked after and felt as if we were resented for not eating in the more expensive restaurant.

The Bedford is creaky and old - gives characcter. Food in the main restaurant is a bit hit or miss for the price. Breakfast average. Bar food and snaks much better value for money. Nice atmosphere with a charm of it's own.

We had a three course dinner which was very tasty. My partner's rack of lamb was tender and he would recommend/order it again. Home made ice creams were gorgeous! The staff were really friendly and helpful. Our thanks to Robybn, Alex and Rob for making our evening so enjoyable.

Good service, comfortable ambience and pleasant food! Situated in the heart of Tavistock right on the edge of the Moors - well worth a visit. Has own parking!
